Meet Sonia! A fourth-year Honours Psychology student with a minor in Finance. Sonia’s favourite class has been PSYC 339 (Abnormal Psychology) thanks to an amazing professor and fascinating material. You can usually find them studying in Student Group Room C in SAMU. After their degree, they’re aiming for grad school and internships in rehabilitation. Sonia is doing research with Dr. Nicole Anderson on Handwriting Psychology , studying how handwriting connects to psychometrics and adult literacy. Through the Psych Club, they hope to make it more well-known across campus, not just with psych majors, but with the whole Arts & Science community!
Meet Abby! She is a fourth year Bachelor of Science student at MacEwan, in her last year of honours psychology. Her favourite class was PSYC 400, because she loves presentations and collaborating with fellow honours students. Her favourite place to study is the psychology collab room. Abby studies a neural signal called reward positivity via EEG alongside Dr. Cameron Hassall, and presented her results in Victoria last year! This year, Abby’s main focus with SPN is to lead the marketing team with new branding and marketing ideas.
Meet Avery! She is a fourth-year Psychology student minoring in Sociology with a specialization in Criminology. Avery volunteers with the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association and the Edmonton Police Cadet Corps, and is completing an independent study on technological acquisitions in North American police services. Her future goals include pursuing a Master’s in Counselling Psychology and opening her own practice to support first responders. Outside of school, she enjoys being outdoors, reading, and baking!
Meet Calvin! He’s a fourth-year BSc Psychology student whose favourite class was PSYC 275, where he loved learning all about the brain. You can usually spot him studying on Floor 5 of Building 9. After his degree, Calvin hopes to return to MacEwan for a Psych Nursing degree. Through the Psych Club, he’s excited to share info with fellow students; whether it’s about honours, volunteering, research, or other opportunities at MacEwan!
EVENTS TEAM
Meet Sheannelle, a third-year Bachelor of Arts student majoring in Psychology with a minor in Classics. Her favourite class so far has been PSYC 241 (Social Psychology), which helped her understand how psychology applies to everyday life and human behaviour. Sheannelle usually studies on the third floor of the library in the silent section. After her degree, she plans to pursue a Master’s in Psychology. She would like to research connections between classical studies and psychology, such as the Oedipus and Electra complexes and Jung’s theories of storytelling and archetypes. Through SPN, she hopes to foster camaraderie, share resources, and encourage thoughtful discussions among her peers.
Meet Adam! He is an Honours Psychology student in the Bachelor of Arts program at MacEwan. His favourite class has been PSYC 405: Testosterone, Sex, and Society with Dr. Scott Semenyna, where he enjoyed the open seminar discussions and critical perspectives on current issues. Adam’s favourite study spot is his research lab, one of the perks of being in the Honours program. His research includes developing a new measure of executive functions using 3D-printed stimuli, as well as independent projects on sex ratios and sociosexuality, and improving academic poster design. After graduation, he plans to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology and continue his research career. Through SPN, Adam hopes to help students get more involved in research and make the most of their learning experience at MacEwan.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TEAM
Meet Sebastian, a fifth-year Honours Psychology student at MacEwan! His favourite course has been PSYC 449: Topics in Social Psychology (Scientific Skepticism), where he explored pseudoscience, critical thinking, and even participated in a ghost-hunting activity. Spoiler: no ghosts were found. Sebastian’s favourite study spot is Towers! His research examines the prevalence of pseudoscientific beliefs and interventions that promote scientific literacy and critical thinking, including experiments debunking claims like dowsing rods. After graduation, he plans to pursue research in educational psychology and hopes to bring more networking and career-focused opportunities to psychology students through SPN.
Meet Gabriel, a third-year Bachelor of Arts student majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology! His favourite course so far has been PSYC 339 (Abnormal Psychology), which he found especially interesting and insightful. Gabriel’s favourite study spot is on the first floor of Building 9. After completing his degree, he plans to pursue a career in counselling. Through SPN, Gabriel hopes to contribute by supporting research initiatives and helping fellow students get involved in hands-on learning opportunities.

Meet Brigid!! She is a fourth-year Bachelor of Arts student majoring in Psychology with a minor in Gender Studies. Her favourite class has been PSYC 339 (Abnormal Psychology), which deepened her understanding of mental health and the process of assessing and diagnosing mental disorders. You can often find her studying on the third floor of the library. After completing her degree, Brigid plans to pursue a Master’s in Counselling and become a registered psychologist. Through SPN, she hopes to share her passion for psychology and help plan fun, informative events that bring students together.
Meet Brooklyn, a third-year Bachelor of Science student majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology! Her favourite class so far has been PSYC 258, though she’s especially looking forward to taking PSYC 275 next. Brooklyn’s go-to study spots are by the pool or on the first floor of Building 7/8 near ADR and the gym. After completing her degree, she hopes to attend graduate school and eventually work in the field of forensic psychology. Through SPN, Brooklyn aims to bring energy and enthusiasm to event planning and help create a welcoming space where psychology students feel at home.
Destiny is a third-year Bachelor of Science in Psychology student! Her favourite class so far has been PSYC 339 (Abnormal Psychology), particularly the section on mood disorders, where she found it fascinating to learn about the biological factors behind mental health conditions and their treatment. Destiny’s favourite study spot is upstairs in Building 7, preferably in a booth. After her degree, she plans to pursue medicine, with a focus on making mental and emergency care more accessible for youth. As VP of Events, Destiny aims to create engaging and informative events that spark meaningful conversations, promote awareness, and foster a strong sense of community within SPN.
MARKETING TEAM
Julia is a third-year BA Psychology student at MacEwan University. Her favourite class so far has been PSYC 223 (Developmental Psychology) with Dr. Vongpaisal, where she enjoyed learning about childhood development both biologically and socially, while also building lasting friendships. Julia can often be found studying in the silent library in Building 7. After completing her degree, she plans to pursue a Master’s or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, with the goal of working in Pediatric Clinical Neuropsychology or a related field supporting children. Through SPN, Julia hopes to contribute by helping create engaging events and info sessions that bring psychology students together!
Angela Juson is a third-year Bachelor of Arts student majoring in Psychology at MacEwan University. Her favourite class has been PSYC 405 (Anxiety Mechanisms), and enjoyed learning how dysfunctional beliefs cause/maintain anxiety disorders, and how to treat them. Angela often studies in one of the library’s quiet study rooms. After completing her degree, Angela plans to continue on to graduate school, though she is still exploring which discipline to specialize in, she's leaning towards Psychedelic-Assisted therapy. As SPN's VP for Digital Media, Angela hopes to use her creative skills to bring our digital presence to life!
Dr. Vongpaisal is interested in how children develop their communication skills through music and speech, and how these skills are affected by hearing loss and other special conditions. Her current research is exploring strategies that use multiple sensory modalities (e.g., vision and movement) to optimize hearing outcomes in deaf children with cochlear implants.
