Our selected plant growth regulator - Auxin
Auxin is a group of plant hormones that play a crucial role in plant growth and development. The most well-known and extensively studied auxin is indole-3-acetic acid (IAA).
In this structure, the long carbon chain represents the alkyl portion, and the carboxylic acid group (-COOH) is attached to the end. The indole ring (with two fused benzene rings) is located near the center of the structure.
It's worth noting that the term "auxin" encompasses a group of structurally related compounds, and different auxins may have slight variations in their molecular structures. Nonetheless, the structure shown above represents the basic structure of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), which is a widely studied and important auxin in plant biology.
Auxin is a type of plant hormone that helps plant in regulating its growth and its development. Auxin can be found in apical meristems and other parts of the plant that is immature. The build-up of auxin is influenced by nitrogen sources and the availability of nitrate promotes auxin transfer from the shoots to roots.
FUNCTIONS OF AUXIN
It stimulates cell enlargement and stem growth.
It stimulates cell division, which is used in tissue culture plant production in combination with Cytokinin.
It influences vascular tissue differentiation of phloem and xylem in the elongating shoot.
It stimulates root initiation on stem cuttings.
It exhibit apical dominance through the suppression of lateral buds growth and promotes apical shoot growth.
High concentration of auxin is toxic and is being use in controlling weeds.
To investigate the effect of different auxin concentrations on root development in plant cuttings.
To determine the influence of auxin application on seed germination rates and seedling growth under varying environmental conditions.
To investigate the response of plants to auxin in terms of tropic growth, including phototropism, gravitropism, or thigmotropism, and understand the underlying mechanisms.
To explore the use of auxin application for manipulating flowering time and synchronizing flowering in plants for improved crop management.
