Sketches to show and everything in between...
At the beginning of the year I had some idea of what most of the pieces were going to look like and materials that were going to be used for them, even if they were changed a bit or were added later on. To start I made mood boards and drew up sketches which were tacked up on the walls of my studio.
With this show, I wanted to challenge myself to sew more and use techniques I was unfamiliar with, so every piece had a different construction process along with the material used. I would usually start in my mind and envision the construction. I would imagine the finished product, unbuild it, and try to think of what materials and base structures would yield my finished piece. From there, I would either take a glue gun or a sewing machine and go to town. Some pieces were easier than others, as well as more time-consuming.
There was one full dress rehearsal with full makeup, hair, and looks, along with multiple basic blocking rehearsals where models learned their character, timing, and steps. The most interesting part of the process was communicating what I saw in my head to the models to execute my vision.
I had played around a bit with sound design before but was not very versed with layering and transitions to get the exact sound I wanted. Over a few frustrating weeks of splicing together both sounds I recorded in nature/urban areas and Garage Band tracks I was able to further set the tone and experience of my show.
The idea for the set came from the original location, the show was supposed to be in, where I had to install and take down in the same day. I, also being a college student, needed something cheap but impactful, so the trash runway was born. Upon having to move locations to the Peter Paul Luce Gallery at the last minute, I was worried about the size of the space and if I had enough material for it to work. In the end, the vision came to life, the runway was installed, and it set the perfect mood for my show.
The set and sound were installed and set up on the day of the show. The models arrived and either did their own makeup and hair or had help from the artist. There was a full run of lights and sound before the doors opened.
