In 2020, Stephen Bowen founded the Straughn High School Robotics Program. The same year, the team competed in BEST Robotics. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the competition was held online. We worked through many challenges to compete digitally, and we were able to place 2nd overall. The BEST Robotics competition handbook states that this is considered “the highest achievement any team in the competition can accomplish.” After we became familiar with the BEST Robotics competition, we moved onto FIRST Robotics in 2021. FIRST Robotics is a prestigious competition, and we were unprepared for the high caliber of our competitors. We were able to use this experience to prepare ourselves for the next time we enter FIRST Robotics, which would be in 2023. To prepare, we entered BEST Robotics again in 2022. We excelled in this competition. We placed third overall, and we were chosen for the Spirit and Sportsmanship Award. Due to our performance, we were also awarded with the BEST award. This award is given to the team that embodies what BEST Robotics stands for. Because this is such an esteemed award, we were extremely honored to be chosen. Finally, we were ready for the FIRST Robotics competition in 2023. We worked tirelessly to prepare for this competition. We ended the competition with a 5-5 win-loss record and 29th out of 50 teams in ranking. Now, being more knowledgeable in both competitions, we plan to succeed and excel in them.
In Fall of 2023, SHS Robotics attended BEST Robotics in Troy University. Here, the team won numerous awards, including:
2nd Place Engineering Notebook
3rd Place Marketing Presentation
2nd Place Team Exhibit
2nd Place Spirit & Sportsmanship
With these awards, the team was awarded 2nd place in the BEST award and advanced to the South's BEST Competition in Florence, AL.
