DATA PROTECTION AUTHORITY STRATEGIES
A GLOBAL REVIEW OF CURRENT PRACTICE
(launched April 2024)
An independent research report prepared by Steve Wood, Marie-Charlotte Roques-Bonnet & Sebastian Page
What makes an effective Data Protection Authority strategy?
After supporting a number of new DPAs to develop their first strategies, this is the question our self-funded and independent team was eager to address. We wanted to understand:
How can a DPA strategy make a difference on the impact and effective delivery of regulatory functions?
Are there common practices amongst DPAs?
Can we identify good practices that could be shared with others?
How are DPAs planning and changing their approach for regulation of emerging technologies, such as AI?
Are DPAs planning to leverage new technologies in their own operations?
What challenges and opportunities do DPAs encounter in the strategy development process?
This report aims to answer those questions.
This report has been produced to assess the strategies developed by data protection authorities (DPAs) across the globe, and to consider how they adapt to future challenges, including the regulation of emerging technologies.
The aim is to enable discussion within the data protection community about the strategic direction of regulation, based on the factual observation of current practices, and analysis of upcoming challenges and opportunities.
