Following its first detection in China's Hubei Province in December 2019 and subsequent global spread, the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is now a major global health crisis, with the WHO declaring it a pandemic on 11th March 2020. In response to the pandemic, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) mounted a comprehensive rapid response, leveraging a broad and diverse range of local platforms and partners, with the aim of slowing and stopping transmissions, providing optimal care for all patients particularly the critically ill, and minimizing the impact of COVID-19 on communities, vulnerable persons, access to essential social services and economic livelihoods. The Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) launched in 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya. The School is a multi-faceted education and training centre serving journalists, communicators, media executives and entrepreneurs in East Africa and beyond. The GSMC seeks to foster an ethical, diverse, independent, innovative and economically thriving media and communications sector, that contributes to the creation of successful and sustainable societies in an era of rapid change. Despite the social and economic despair brought about by Covid 19 there have been incredible stories of hope, compassion, care & light. This project aims to showcase these Stories of Hope from Uganda & Kenya. Highlighting the resiliency & compassion throughout various communities that allowed for a lifeline for so many. [more]
The GSMC is recruiting fifteen(15) field journalists; eight (8) in Kenya and seven (7) in Uganda, to share stories of hope and positivity despite the scourge of the Covid 19 pandemic. Spearheading the project will be one (1) Project Coordinator. Job descriptions & TOR for both positions can be found here.
Each Field Journalist must commit to producing five (5) stories from their country, in a media format of their choice. Journalists will receive training and equipment in order to carry out their tasks and will be paid for each of the five stories produced, detailed here.
