Stories of Algebra

"Stories of Algebra" is a series of activities in the ASSISTments platform where students pose, solve, and share algebra problems related to their interests. We have created an experience where students receive activities personalized to their career interests (e.g., healthcare, IT), and/or personalized to their everyday interests (e.g., sports, video games). We have created these activities to a wide variety of types of mathematical functions - including linear, exponential, logarithmic, and power - and have targeted our activities to algebraic courses from 8th grade math, to Algebra 1, to Algebra 2, to College Algebra.

Explore How Algebra is Used in STEM Careers

Students can use our materials to learn about how algebra is used in different career areas they are interested in. Once they've learned about how algebra is used in their careers, they become the story-tellers and they write their own original story about how algebra is used in their career area.

Explore How Algebra is Used in Everyday Life

Students can also use our materials to explore how algebra is used in popular culture areas like sports, video games, and social networking. They learn about different applications, and then can tell their own algebra story based on their unique experiences with using numbers and quantities in their everyday life.
