As you can see from this hospital photo of me, I was born with my right foot turned inward. The doctor gave my parents two options: wait until I was walking and then put me in a leg brace for several years to straighten it (think: "Run, Forest, run!") or break my leg before I started walking, set it straight, cast it, and let it heal.
My parents chose the 2nd option and I wore cast from hip to toe for several weeks. It was changed out every couple of weeks or so as I grew. (No photos exist—as far as I can determine—of me in the cast.) As you can imagine, they were constantly being asked, “What happened to her?” or “What happened to your baby?” with a thinly veiled accusation embedded of, “What did you DO to your baby?”
My father, finally fed up with the questions, started answering with, “It was a skiing accident!”
That shut them up.
