Please see the link below for the proposed law banning BESS in Mt. Pleasant.
***Remember, the moratorium expires in September 2025. As soon as the moratorium lapses, proposals may be made to the town to develop BESS. At this time, there are at least two developers ready to make submissions.
If you cannot attend the meeting, then please email or write to the Town Board in support of this legislation.
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fires can last for days. In the past, they have been caused by extreme heat, lightning strikes, water, or malfunctions. Based on previous fires at these factilities, the toxic plume, known as a thermal runaway, may reach a 5 mile radius. This map depicts a 3 mile radius impact zone for each of the four (2 existing, 2 proposed) BESS facilities in Mount Pleasant.
Where would you go? Would you even come back?
A BESS is a Battery Energy Storage System.
Acquest, which already owns multiple properties on 9A (including Amazon), wants to install over THIRTY Tesla Megapack 2 XL large-scale rechargable lithium-ion battery storage site. This is 130 MW!
New Leaf Energy also wants to install six Tesla Megapack 2 XL batteries at 115 Wall Street in Valhalla.
There are already 2 BESS in Mount Pleasant: one behind the Hawthorne Reformed Church (near the train station) and one by the Town Pool and Community Center on Lozza Drive.
Should our town have FOUR plants?
Why should we house 4 of NY's 47 BESS in just our small town?
Thermal runaway is when a battery overheats and catches fire. This risk is exponentially higher in larger systems.
BESS fires release toxic gasses including hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen, methane, ethylene, and carbon monoxide. You would be living next to a ticking time bomb.
Battery storage produces nothing and only stores energy to sell back to the grid at high peak times at the top market rate. We will see no decrease in our energy bills.
These plants leak poisonous substances into the ground and water run-off.
Fires at a BESS plant are not able to be extinguished with water. They must be allowed to burn off for days, if not weeks, causing mass evacuations and shelter-in-place orders.
We must voice our opposition to the proposed New York Senate Bill S5506. Protect local control!
Proposed NYS Senate Bill S5506 will take away local municipalities’ control over where these dangerous BESS facilities can be placed. Go to "Your Voice Matters" for a template to send to State and County representatives.
They claim it takes "6 hours to burn down," yet a recent fire at a small 10 MW site burned for 11 days, forcing mass evacuatitons. Remember, Acquest wants to install a much larger (HUNDREDS of MW) facility in our town.
