1) Brainstorming
The teachers announced the participation in Media Literacy Days Event to the students. The topic was: "Is this real?" and the project should deal with fake news, misinformation, abuse of the Internet and the effect it has on today's society.
The students brainstormed, with the help of their mentors, and came up with an idea to film a STOP MOTION film in which they will present how the Internet can affect out lives. We correlated the film to Easter time and held workshops.
2) Workshops organization
The teachers divided the students into groups, based on their preferences and abilities. There were three initial workshops:
A) script creation
B) scene creation using recycled materials
C) tech group for filming audio and video
3) Script creation
Script creation process was led by mentor Ingrid Žorž. She and her group created a script, the story outline and exercised on reading the script for later filming.
4) Scene creation using recycled material
Mentor Lovorka Gračanin Knežević led her group of students to create the scene and characters for the filming, using scraps and used cardboard - applying the principles od recycling and reusing.
5) Tech group for filming audio and video
The tech group led by Ivana Brckan and Mirela Radošević was in charge for finding and creating sound effects. Later, they recorded the audio which was later used and edited together with the video.
The filming of the video took a lot of time and effort, because for stop motion films, one needs at least 10 frames per second, which means the students had to take almost 2000 photographs, each capturing a single, minimal movement of the characters, for our 3 minute film.
Later, they participated in editing the video by merging the sound and effects.
6) Presentation of the project
The students, after finishing their work, presented the stop motion film to the whole school, students and teachers.
The film recieved very positive reactions and other students were in awe when they've seen how much work had to be done.
The end result looks pretty professional, especially if we take into account that the school has no equipment for filming, whatsoever!
7) Conclusion
The resulting film received a very positive feedback.
We implemented different topics, such as:
-media literacy
-safe Internet
-critical thinking
-recycling and reusing
Future plans
This project resulted in an idea to organize a film workshop in school every year. Maybe sometime in the future we manage to get a donation in the form of needed equipment or funds which would be used for this purpose.
The film inspired our students and created bonds which we didn't even hope for :-)
