Gather Your Tools
You don't need to take much with you when you go pull weeds, but here are some essential items, plus a few nice additions.
Essential
Sturdy gloves. If you are pulling Myrtle Spurge, gloves with a latex lining will protect your hands from the weed's caustic sap
Long pants to protect your legs
Sturdy, close-toed shoes to protect your feet
Garbage bags to collect pulled weeds
Plenty of water!!
Sunscreen
Non-Essential, but helpful
Shovel, for more tenacious weeds
If pulling Puncturevine, a hand weeder like the one pictured here, to the right
Eye protection, like sunglasses or goggles. The sap from Myrtle Spurge can cause real harm if it gets in your eyes
Your smartphone, to log your location and help ID plants
Prep for potential risks & hazards
Make sure to tell someone where you're going if you're headed out alone
Pulling weeds in rattlesnake country means watching where you are putting your feet and hands. Be aware of rattlesnakes, and give them plenty of space!
Heat exhaustion can come on quickly, so wearing protective layers, using sunscreen, and hydrating is important
If you are allergic to things like bee stings, bring your EpiPen
Storms in Utah pop up out of nowhere. Keep an eye on the sky!
