Gather Your Tools

Step 3: Gather Your Tools

You don't need to take much with you when you go pull weeds, but here are some essential items, plus a few nice additions.

Essential

  • Sturdy gloves. If you are pulling Myrtle Spurge, gloves with a latex lining will protect your hands from the weed's caustic sap

  • Long pants to protect your legs

  • Sturdy, close-toed shoes to protect your feet

  • Garbage bags to collect pulled weeds

  • Plenty of water!!

  • Sunscreen

Non-Essential, but helpful

  • Shovel, for more tenacious weeds

  • If pulling Puncturevine, a hand weeder like the one pictured here, to the right

  • Eye protection, like sunglasses or goggles. The sap from Myrtle Spurge can cause real harm if it gets in your eyes

  • Your smartphone, to log your location and help ID plants

Prep for potential risks & hazards

  • Make sure to tell someone where you're going if you're headed out alone

  • Pulling weeds in rattlesnake country means watching where you are putting your feet and hands. Be aware of rattlesnakes, and give them plenty of space!

  • Heat exhaustion can come on quickly, so wearing protective layers, using sunscreen, and hydrating is important

  • If you are allergic to things like bee stings, bring your EpiPen

  • Storms in Utah pop up out of nowhere. Keep an eye on the sky!
