A combined training session for our S1-3 girls under the stewardship of Gordi McGregor. Thanks to our senior coaches Mia Russell and Euan Beattie for their assistance.
Our S1 and S2 girls were fortunate to very quickly get the opportunity to pull on the red, black and white of Stonelaw when we made the long journey to Oban, (yes, Oban!) for a girl’s development day. The journey was an eventful one. However, we finally made it and when the girls took to the field, they showed no signs of being affected, producing some outstanding individual and team performances on the day. The girls showed progress during the touch rugby matches in the morning but as we progressed to SCRAG (a form of contact rugby without the full completion of the tackle) the girls really came into their own. They showed outstanding bravery and commitment and a willingness to work hard for their teammates. A great day was had by all Friendships were established not only amongst our own girls from S1&S2 but with opposing schools such as St Thomas Aquinas. After getting a taster of SCRAG the girls were desperate for their first full contact game, they were given the opportunity when they took on St Pauls at GHA Rugby Club. The girls produced an outstanding performance, showing bravery and commitment to win the match by 4 tries to 3. Our try scorers were Rebecca Cowan, Kirsty Miller and Emma Boyd (2). However the whole team were outstanding and worked extremely hard to prevent St Pauls to limit St Pauls to 3 tries. Last week our S1 girls were fortunate to receive a guest coaching session from Cartha Head Coach Thomas Davidson. The girls worked extremely hard and impressed Thomas with their attitude and commitment. I would like to say a big thank you to Thomas from our Stonelaw SoR pupils.
Our S3 SoR programme is now available for pupils to select in the Column K Option Column alongside some extremely popular courses such as DofE and Sports Leaders. It is testament to the commitment and loyalty of our pupils that the majority who started with us in S1 selected to continue their rugby journey in S3. Our S3 girls work under the guidance of Cambuslang coach James Brown, with most already working under his stewardship at Cambuslang Rugby Club, where James leads the Under 15’s girls programme. Many our SoR pupils from S1-3 represent Cambuslang at the weekend and it's fair to say the number of pupils playing rugby at Stonelaw was a significant factor in the recent establishment of the girl’s section at Cambuslang. James has shown an incredible commitment to developing rugby at Stonelaw High School. He is always willing to help develop rugby within our school and has been a major contributing factor in a large percentage of our players taking the step from school to club rugby.
The girls are also coached by our Chemistry and Physics teacher Miss Kyle, who has taken her love of rugby one step further and volunteered to help with our SoR programme. It is great to have her on board and I know the girls really value having a female role model involved in the programme. Coming from a sporting background, I don’t think it will be long before Miss Kyle starts her rugby playing career.
