Stonehound Studios strives to be as environmentally conscious as possible,
this can be seen in my chosen materials for production.
Wood pieces are either made from reclaimed and recycled wood, are made default using environmentally sustainable baltic plywood, or using customer-specified wood in custom orders or upgrades. Some exceptions will be made, but wood will be chosen with sustainability in mind. You'd be surprised just how much wood is sustainably sourced in today's world!
Wood will be finished in a few possible ways depending on the needs of the project:
most woodcuts will be finished using Hemp Oil, an equally foodsafe alternative to Butcher's Block Oil or Mineral Oil- both of which are derived from petroleum byproducts as opposed to Hemp Oil which is derived from one of the most sustainable and versatile plants on the planet.
*This does mean that you may have to refresh the finish every few months or years of heavy use with another coat of Hemp Oil, as you would do with any similarly treated material using foodsafe oil.
If a thicker and stronger finish is needed, an environmentally conscious varnish will be applied in either gloss or matte finish.
(This eliminates the need to refresh the finish periodically)
If the piece requires color, I am currently expanding into the use of Milk Paint, which can be sealed and preserved after drying with Hemp Oil. Other possibilities include environmentally friendly stains and alcohol inks as needed
Lastly, as I expand my offerings I will be using EcoEpoxy. In the past I had fallen in love with UV Resin, but quickly discovered that UV Resin is not environmentally friendly- it is actually quite the opposite. EcoEpoxy is different, as are nearly any epoxy as epoxy is an environmentally conscious material. This will allow me to add a variety of unique designs as I reapply my resin experience to epoxy- including UV Reactive and Glow in the Dark powder, colorshift pigments, metallic and vibrant mica powder, alcohol inks, embedded ash, and more!
As I expand and grow, I will be adding additional possibilities to my offerings, including stone, crystal, metal, glass, and more!
