Student Life
Living together is an integral part of seminary formation. Therefore communal meals, conversations over mid-morning coffee/tea and recreational activities are almost as important as the lectures and communal prayer and worship. Students take their turn at serving in the refectory and clearing up after meals and are also expected to contribute to the smooth running of the community by taking on various responsibilities known as ‘house jobs’, such as mowing the grass, cleaning the pool, house and vehicle maintenance, and vegetable gardens.
The Seminary is home for the students (and staff) for much of the year, so the other facilities – beyond the chapel and lecture rooms – are all important for the well-being of the community. Everything from laundry facilities to recreational spaces (and time off to use them!) are invaluable to the people who live here.
The seminary is a large home and as such, we all make it our home and share the resources such as the lounges, common areas, garden, and pool as the first Christian communities would have done.
During free time, students are welcome to visit Matlosana Mall (5km away), Klerksdorp (10km), Potchefstroom (35km), or find local things to do in the small town of Stilfontein. Opportunities abound to join a local soccer, cricket, and rugby teams. For those who prefer to stay closer to home, there are lounges for tv, wi-fi internet available all throughout the house and grounds, gardens, and a pool for those hot summer days. For the health enthusiast, there is a Virgin Active gym located at the Mall, 5km away and one can also join there. And finally, for all, there is an electronic library of more than 8,000 volumes of many different areas of interest including of course, theology.
