COVID-19 Safey Precautions and Rules

  • Anyone who is sick or experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID-19, or recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19 should stay home. Same plan as school.

  • Anyone awaiting test results due to a suspected infection should stay home

  • Masks must be worn except when exercising or recovering

  • Kids must keep a 6’ distance at all times

  • Kids will be temperature screened upon arrival

  • Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will be sent home

  • Hand sanitizer will be available and frequent use encouraged

  • No sharing of water

Participation Rules for Middle School Track

Attendance at practices and meets is required unless your child is participating in another sport and you have discussed a plan with Coach George or Coach Kelley. For your child's safety, he or she must be getting the proper amount of training to be able to safely race, pass a baton, jump, hurdle, or throw an implement. Also, this is a team sport with relays and an overall scoring system. When kids do not attend meets, relay teams get disqualified and our score suffers. To be fair to the kids who attend practices and meets, we will give them priority in choosing their events. We will do our best to accommodate those in multiple sports by working with your other sports' coaches and being flexible with practices days and times.

Meets/Events

  • Meets are mandatory unless other arrangements have been made (please see Participation Rules).

  • Shelby 78 Meets (6th-8th Grade) are on Thursdays in April (will be on Tuesday instead of Thursday the week before Easter) with a Championship on Thursday and Friday at the end of April.

  • MYA Meets (3rd-8th Grade) are typically on Saturdays in April and early May. These will primarily be for Elementary School.

  • Field Events include Discus*, Shot Put, High Jump and Long Jump.

  • Track Events include 100m Hurdles*, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m.

  • Parents are needed to help manage field events. Volunteers are preferred.

*some events are for Middle School only.

Practices

  • Practice is mandatory unless other arrangements have been made (please see Participation Rules).

  • On weekdays, we will generally practice Monday, Thursday, and one additional weekday from 5-6:30.

  • Weekends depend on where we can borrow a track, but will generally be mid to late afternoon on Sundays.

  • We will typically practice at St. Louis, CBHS, or the University of Memphis Field House.

  • Elementary School will not practice as often. Generally, one day during the week and one day on the weekend.

  • Practice dates and times will always be subject to change based on track availability and Spring weather.

  • Each week's schedule will be confirmed by the previous Thursday.

Meet Etiquette

  • Please arrive 30 minutes prior to Meet time.

  • Parents are responsible for making sure their child stays close to the coaches and/or our team meeting location.

  • Parents are responsible for monitoring the behavior of their child prior to their race. Wrestling, fighting, pushing, or bullying will not be tolerated.

Preparation for Practices and Meets

  • For practices, wear wicking materials and running shorts. Cotton shirts and/or very long/pocketed shorts interfere with proper cooling and running efficiency.

  • Be prepared for cold weather. Wear warm running clothes layered over shorts that can be removed if the weather changes.

  • Bring snacks for Meets. Here are great some snack ideas:

    • Apple and peanut butter or almond butter

    • Pretzels or crackers with PB or AB

    • Carrots and Ranch

    • Fruit and nuts

    • Trail mix

    • Fruit and cheese

    • Cheese stick with turkey or ham

    • Frozen grapes or bananas and cheese

    • Kind or Lara Bar (simple ingredients)

  • ALWAYS bring your own water. Water is not provided at practices or Meets.

  • Spikes are a great idea for Meets. Breakaway or Fleet Feet are good sources.

  • Use the bathroom BEFORE practice. Bathrooms are not always available.

  • Asthma suffers must bring their inhalers

Goals

  • Teach kids how to run and have fun

  • Help the kids learn how to “Accept the Challenge”

  • Foster the desire for improvement

  • Experience the sense of self-accomplishment

  • Welcome all types of athletes

Communication

  • This website will be our central communication tool along with TeamSnap.

  • Weekly emails confirming the schedule will be sent.

  • Urgent messages will be sent via TeamSnap.

Uniforms

Uniform jerseys will be provided, but not shorts. Please make sure the kids have black running shorts to wear for the meets. If you would like to purchase the shorts that match our uniforms, go to www.augustaactive.com and order boys accelerate shorts, style #356. The sizes run pretty much right on, but if you're stuck between 2 sizes, order larger.

Injuries/Medical

  • Bring Asthma inhalers

  • Stretch at home to prevent injuries

  • Kids will be sore. Try to distinguish between sharp pains versus aching pains. Sharp pains mean it is time to stop and recover.

  • Advil after a practice with sore legs

  • Ice at night for 20 minutes

  • If injuries persist, do not let them run and see a doctor
