As one of the most powerful natural disaster, hurricane is not a new thing to farmers in St. Kitts and Nevis. The hurricane season in St. Kitts and Nevis usually start from July and last until September.
We've all know that there is little thing we could do when facing this kind of disaster, hurricane could easily destroy you field by its strong wind and heavy rain. However, there is still something you could do to reduce the damage from hurricane:
Check the hurricane information daily.
Harvest earlier if necessary.
Reinforce fruit trees by setting up scaffold.
Clean the draining system to prevent water logging.
Hill up some soil to the base of plants to prevent them from falling, this is especially important for higher plants such as maize, sweet pepper and okra.
Do not sow or transplant.
Clean the field, maintain the field sanitation.
Remove the stagnant water in the field to protect plants.
Carry out pest and diseases control, many of them may happen after plant got hurt by the hurricane.
Fertilization accelerates plant recovery.
Repair damaged facilities.
