The most common abiotic stress in St. Kitts and Nevis. Since most of the farmlands are rainfed in St. Kitts and Nevis, drought could have a heavily impact to local agriculture.
The dry season in St. Kitts and Nevis is usually Feburary to April. However, because of global climate change, the drought period is becoming more and more unpredictable and the risk of long-tern drought (no rainfall for 2 weeks) is becoming higher and higher in Caribbean region.
There is no need to say what drought can do to the plants. To fight against drought, irrigation is always the most effective way. Build up irrigation system is important for farmers in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Establish drip irrigation system and maintain it by schedule.
Set up water harvesting and storage system.
Use conservation tillage (crop residue left on your field after harvest) to increase soil moisture and reduce evaporation.
Apply mulch (organic mulch preferred) to keep soil moisture.
Choose drought tolerant varieties.
