Job #2: Research

Project 1: Pre-bankruptcy settlements (financed by the CERGE-EI Teaching Fellows grant)

Firm bankruptcy is an occupational hazard of entrepreneurs and is considered a standard fact of capitalism. Modern bankruptcy laws offer a reorganization opportunity and are present around the world, with the most notable examples being the US Chapters 7 and 11. The project aims to estimate the effects of the pre-bankruptcy settlement procedure in the Republic of Croatia and is carried out in cooperation with Princeton University School of Public and International Affairs.

Team members: Professor Jacob N. Shapiro (Princeton University), Professor Randall Filer (Hunter College, CUNY), Postdoc Dejan Kovač (Princeton University)

Project 2: Public procurement contracts (financed by the University of Dubrovnik VIF grant)

Public procurement is the procurement of goods, services and works on behalf of a public authority, such as a government agency. Receiving a government contract in certain conditions can be treated as a government demand shock, and we investigate the effects of such a shock.

Team members: Melko Dragojević (Research Assistant, University of Dubrovnik)

Project 3: Exports: who are exporters, and how can we support them? (financed by the University of Innsbruck eeecon grant)

Small open economies need to boost exports in order to increase their gross domestic product. In this project we answer the question of how effective are direct government policies worldwide in supporting exporters, and we try to understand the process of firm growth and internationalization in small open economies.

Team members: Professor Janette Walde (University Innsbruck, Austria), Professor Emeritus Joachim Wagner (Leuphana University Lüneburg, Germany), Professor Alex Coad (Waseda University, Japan), Professor Mario Larch (University of Bayreuth, Germany)

Research outputs (in Working Papers):

Project 4. Impact evaluation of public support

A government grant is a financial award given by the federal, state, or local government authority for a beneficial project of some sort. The aim of this project is to conduct a series of impact evaluations on public grants in order to answer the several research questions, including, is there a positive effect of public grants on firm performance; if there is a positive effect, what is the magnitude of these effects; how can grants be better designed in terms of targeting, purpose and its size?

Project 5. High growth firms

The so-called 'High Growth Firms' (HGFs) create a lion share of new jobs in any economy, for example, in the United Kingdom, 6% of firms, the HGFs, created 50% of all new jobs. In this series of studies, I confirm stylized facts on HGFs in Slovenia and Croatia and use machine learning tools to improve the prediction of HGFs.
