Gieffrei de Toesni, known as Jeff the Moneyer, joined the SCA in 2012. He began the journey in Barony Beyond the Mountain, but moved to Bridge to be with his beloved Anna Dokeianina Syrakousina. They wed in 2014, and left the East Kingdom for Caid in 2016. He then relocated to Trimaris in 2018, Atlantia in 2020, and then returned to Trimaris in 2022.
He was one of the founding members of The Smoking Bridge Guild of Libation Brewers, and was known for his completely not-period heavy stout beer, codename "Chocolate Covered Bacon." Ironically, he's never made the same batch twice.
He was a self proclaimed Authenticity Nerd, and wouldn't set foot at his first event without even the proper footwear. This also includes his flat-wedge riveted chain heavy armor set. He fought with Freehold of the Riverkeep and fenced with Clan SITH.
Gieffrei was a journeyman in the Interkingdom Moneyer's Guild, and is one of the few practicing the art of coinmaking in the East Kingdom, where they are used as tokens by royalty and others. (NOT money!) He brought the art to Calafia, where he taught a few members of the baronial metalworking guild. He also had Anna send him a box of supplies during a deployment so he could keep busy during downtime. Dedication is defined as making coin bits in the spacious quarters aboard a fast-attack submarine. Jeff was not able to complete a coin run for Trimaris or Atlantia, but did teach as many as he could by offering handmade kits and encouraging folks to pick up the art.
At Birka 2019, the Royal East Kingdom Moneyers Guild was formed, led by Jeff, despite living in Trimaris at the time.
Another passion was architecture and engineering, and Gieffrei was in the process of blueprinting a modern adaptation of a Norman motte and bailey, hoping to have been his retirement project when he completed his time in the US Navy. He was apprenticed to Master Tristan de Worrell of the East Kingdom, who passed unexpectedly in early 2021.
Jeff was a passionate patron of the arts and sciences in the SCA, and supported everyone in their endeavors even outside of his own skills. He disliked competitions and cruel judges, and was a firm believer in the educational aspect of the game, and rather than compete or display, he preferred to set up demos and invite folks to join him with hands-on crafting.
He was a bit of a mad scientist and beyond moneying and SCA crafts in metal and wood, Jeff was restoring a 1974 Volkswagen Beetle and probably spent more money at Harbor Freight Tools than humanly possible.
Mundanely, Jeff was Chief Petty Officer Jeffery Lloyd Perrone of the United States Navy Submarine Service. Chief Perrone served on the USS Providence (SSN-719) for two tours as Quartermaster based at SUBASE New London, Groton, CT, one tour aboard the USS Alexandria (SSN-757) as Assistant Navigator (ANAV) based at Naval Base Point Loma, San Diego, CA, and one tour aboard the USS Albany (SSN-753) as ANAV based at NS Norfolk, Norfolk VA. Shore commands included a full tour at Camp Ali Al Salem in Kuwait, NSSC at SUBASE New London, and Submarine Group 10 at SUBASE Kings Bay, GA. Chief Perrone was dedicated to his decades long career in the US Navy and was looking forward to a peaceful retirement, and the remainder of his life that was cruelly stripped away from him by cancer.
In July of 2022, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer: neuroendocrine carcinoma, which had a point of origin in the colon and was fully metastatic when discovered. After an 8 month battle, he joined those on eternal patrol on March 18th, 2023. He was 2 weeks shy of his 42nd birthday.
