In the Orthodox and Catholic churches, saints are intercessors, they use prayer to act on your behalf to reach the higher power, rather than answer your prayers directly. However, cult and folk practice can differ. In some cults, such as that of the Virgin Mary, many choose to worship her and seek her own divine intervention. This is actually considered a heresy but Vatican II sought to make changes and Mariology as a whole can be quite complicated, but it is an example that most folks are familiar with.
The Feast of St. Jeff is a commemoration of his death on March 18th. This can be celebrated with a simple toast, gatherings, or just nursing your St. Patrick's Day hangover with a bloody mary. On the first commemoration of St. Jeff's Day, a group gathered in Tampa and drank Guinness from his new urn using bendy straws in his heraldic colors before his first class relics were placed in there. This is the level of very serious veneration that should take place.
Cult members in the Barony of Smoking Rocks and Barony of the Bridge in the East Kingdom also venerate St. Jeff on the Eve of the Event of Ice Weasel ("Weasel Eve") by putting out their armor, a dram of scotch, and a rubber chicken the night before in order to bring them luck in the frigid bear pit.
The icon pattern pictured to the left is the official iconography for St. Jeff at this time. It is based on the iconography of St. Joseph the Worker (it was very common to copy icons in period which is why so many of them look the same) only rather than a hammer and a square, Jeff is pictured with a hammer and a coin die.
Iconographic Rules:
Those wishing to recreate the iconography must follow these rules at all times. Deviation from the icon rules is iconoclasm and that will not be tolerated.
Those that wish to write a proper Orthodox icon should do so following the traditional icon schools. The Prosopon Method is the current "authority" stemming from the Moscow School in North America, for example. A true icon must be created from materials taken only from the earth, this includes all pigments and metals, and follow a specific step-by-step instruction. I recommend this site for ease of learning: https://www.betsyporter.com/stepbystep/
Alternative materials are encouraged, such as piecework, embroidery, chase and repousse, carving, etc. But the icon MUST appear the same.
The Halo is the only "changable" feature, which you can see as I didn't ink it over. Halos can have a variety of appearances, but his features must remain the same.
Description of features that must be adhered to:
Skin: Fair
Eyes: blue
Hair: Very light ginger. NOT mermaid red or Carrot Top orange.
Tunics: Overtunics can be blue or green. Undertunics can be blue, green, black, or yellow to match his favorite garb and contrast with the overtunic. Embellishments must be contrasted and visible. This allows for some variation in icons but remain in the same pattern.
Belt must be green with bronze findings.
Tools must be "natural" to the tools.
Paternoster is white with green or blue tassels. These were his award medallions for the Eastern Maunche and Silver Crescent.
His chain was a mix of metals: silver, bronze, and oxidized. Charms on chain are silver or bronze.
Halo should always be gold.
A votive offering is something traditionally left at a shrine to gain the favor of a saint, while an ex-voto is something given in thanks for their intercession. In the case of St. Jeff, here is a list of offerings that should be given.
Votive:
In the case of a dangerous, stupid, or "hey y'all watch this" craft on the horizon, provide St. Jeff with Diet Dr. Pepper before beginning the project.
Jeff enjoyed burning fine incense. If you choose to have incense, please use only true resins like frankincense, myrrh, and dragon's blood on charcoal. Do not use sticks or cones and purchase your incense resins from responsible and ethical sources.
You can never go wrong with candles in any form of votive (this is where we get the term from), fine beeswax candles, white, blue, or green candles are acceptable. No scents.
Placing a 2nd or 3rd class relic on a broken machine (say, like a 3d printer) and yelling obscenities has also worked.
Ex-Voto:
In the event of a completed prayer or just remembrance, a proper pour of Guinness is the best ex-voto. If no Guinness, any heavy "cut with a knife" stout will do.
A dram of Jameson or another fine Irish whiskey.
Handmade coins and other projects. Jeff enjoyed the craft of others as well as his and you can give thanks for his intercession by sharing your art or the art of another with him.
A white candle is always an appropriate ex-voto for any saint.
