FAQ

How do I register my child?

Registration is through this web site - please see the XC Registration link on the home page. There is no manual sign up. You must read and acknowledge the concussion information as part of the sign up process.  You must fill out the 3 forms (for each child) on the links page and take them with you on the first day of practice.  You must use the Sign Up Genius link (Volunteer button) on the home page and volunteer, if you did not select 'opt-out' during the registration process.

When can I sign up?

Registration for the 2023 season will open in August 1 at 7:00am.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the program is $105 (plus credit card processing fees) per child. This includes a tech fabric running shirt (uniform worn at all races).

Can I sign up a child who is younger than 2nd grade?

Children younger than 2nd grade may participate with the approval of the coaches. Please contact Coachnickthompson@gmail.com directly to discuss. Please note that parental supervision is expected for those younger children approved to participate.  Children over 8th grade may NOT participate.

How far do the kids run during a practice?

As much as possible, we believe in tailoring our practices to the individual ages and abilities of each child. We typically have four different workout groups during a given practice. The first group is for beginners and the goal is to introduce running and related drills. Often this group mixes running, walking and drills/games for up to 30 minutes of activity. The second group is typically comprised of returning younger runners or those with other basic athletic experience. They typically run up to 30 minutes in a practice. The third group is typically the more experienced group of returning runners and they run anywhere from 30-45 minutes per practice. The fourth group and most advanced group is for those who have demonstrated to the coaching staff a high level of running experience and ability. Individuals in the advanced group may run up to an hour during a practice.

How long are races?

The races are approximately 1 mile in length for grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. Grades K-2 races approximately ½ mile.

Eligibility: The program is open to both boys and girls in grades 3rd through 8th, from Alamo, Diablo, Danville, and San Ramon. K-2nd graders are eligible under the stipulation that parents will be onsite at all practices and assist if needed.

Boundaries:  Each child will be assigned to either St. Isidore or St. Joan of Arc parish.

 The criteria are as follows:

1.         If your child attends school at St. Isidore School, then indicate St. Isidore*.

2.         If your child attends CCD/Faith Formation at either St. Isidore or St. Joan of Arc, please indicate that parish designation.  Otherwise, the parish designation is based on your geographic location.

3.         If your home is north of Camino Tassajara/Sycamore Road, your parish designation is St. Isidore.

4.         If your home address is South of Camino Tassajara/Sycamore Road, your parish designation is St. Joan of Arc.

* If your child attends school at St. Isidore School, but lives within the St. Joan of Arc boundries, you may indicate either parish, but it must remain that selection for the season.

There are no exceptions.  These boundary rules are established by the Oakland Diocese.

Equipment

Cross Country is a pretty simple sport, yet there are a few required and recommended things that will enhance the experience for your child(ren).

Shoes

Each athlete must have a pair of running shoes. Cross trainers, Vans, basketball shoes or any other type of athletic shoes are not acceptable. Please go to a running store, such as Forward Motion in Danville to get a proper pair of shoes for your child(ren). Please note that Forward Motion offers a 10% discount on shoes, apparel and accessories to CYO participants--simply let them know that your child is on the CYO team when you go to the store.

Note: Please do not buy a pair of ultralight trainers, e.g. Nike Free. These type of shoes will not provide the cushioning and support your child needs nor will they last as long as a basic training shoe.

Apparel

It is important that athletes come dressed and ready to workout. Appropriate apparel consists of shorts and a comfortable t-shirt (short sleeve or long sleeve depending on the weather). Technical fiber apparel that "wicks" moisture away from the skin is preferable to cotton or cotton/poly blends. Sweats--pants and a top--are recommended even when the start of practice appears hot. We will always conclude practice with stretching and it is helpful for the athletes to have sweats to put on as they cool down and the temperature goes down.

Beverages/Snacks

Your child(ren) MUST bring a water bottle to each practice (please label with your child's name.) A sport drink is acceptable though not necessary. A light snack for after practice is also a good idea especially on those harder workout days.

Running is a great sport!  It is simple, can be done nearly anywhere with minimal equipment.  It is a true "lifetime sport" with positive effects on health and academic performance.

For most people starting out, developing the basic fitness and skills is the most difficult part.  (Yes, there are skills in running!)  However, our bodies adapt rapidly and positively to training and become stronger--making what was once difficult much easier.  Not everyone is destined to be a champion but with consistency and commitment everyone can make major improvements.
