The Structural Engineering Lab. at Hankyong National University is a research group consisting of members who major in Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Concrete Structures, but the research topic is not limited to concrete structures and involves composite structures, precast concrete structures, advanced and eco-friendly construction materials that have been investigated in the line with policies in many countries to cope with global climate change all over the world. The research group conducts research on design and analysis for various building structures based on the understanding of material properties and mechanical behavior of structures. The goal of the research group is to achieve a better structural system that can be adopted in the future construction industry, which includes not only structural efficiency related to material saving, sectional optimization, and construction method but also energy efficiency that could be associated with thermal insulation and CDW (construction and demolition waste). To accomplish the tasks, the first phase is to investigate advanced materials such as high-performance concrete, FRP, fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix, lightweight concrete, and high thermal performance concrete. Also, eco-friendly materials such as recycled aggregate concrete and the use of bi-product are included in our research interest. For the second phase, such materials should be thoroughly validated in terms of their structural performance. The next stage of the research group would be the assessment and monitoring of the existing structures utilizing any sophisticated tools such as fuzzy theory and machine learning.
Research is not about achieving a goal, but about finding the right direction to achieve it.
