NICHOLAS RHODES TROPHY 2013
The competition, in memory of Nicholas Rhodes, was fully subscribed with 32 pairs and several on reserve.
After a long day starting at 9.30am and finishing at just before 9.00pm, the eventual winners were Alan Palin & Karen Smith who defeated the inaugural winners in 2011, Rich Lawson & Daisy Weaver 22-14.
This is the first year a ‘Weaver’ has not been on the winners rostrum, as Sarah won the title last year with Clay Flatley. Palin & Smith came through their morning qualifying games conceding just 13 shots over the two games.
Player of the day was undoubtedly Susannah Lawson, 10 year old daughter of Rich Lawson, who with cousin Rob Roden saw off Simon Rhodes & Claire Williams 21-16 in Round 1, followed by Dave & Marie Rhodes 23-20 in Round 2 on the big green.
In an emotional presentation speech, Father of Nicholas, Tony Rhodes, who a few days earlier had suffered the tragic loss of sister Deb, thanked the players and everyone involved in making the event another success and a fitting tribute to his much missed Son, before handing over the trophy and £200 prize money to Club mate Alan Palin and his partner Karen Smith.
