Stewart Indian School Preservation Alliance

Our mission is to promote, fundraise, advocate, and support the Nevada Indian Commission (“NIC”)’s efforts to protect and preserve the history of the Stewart Indian School (“Stewart”) in Carson City, as the only non-reservation Indian boarding school in Nevada.

Our small membership organization can make a lasting impact.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. -Margaret Mead

Preserving the Site and History

Since 1890 under a federal mandate, Stewart Indian School operated for 90 years to educate and assimilate American Indian children. Over the years we have seen growth, change, and transformation to the site. We must preserve it so generations can continue to learn from the lived experiences of students, and understand the tragic history of the federal Indian boarding school era. Stewart has become a symbol of the strength and vitality of the American Indian people. Stewart Indian School Preservation Alliance (SISPA) was founded in 2015 as a 501c3 organization to assist NIC in these preservation efforts of this historical site.

For more information, see the Stewart Indian School website and specifically projects we support at Living Legacy Project.
