In this research project I teamed up with a colleague from the Jackson School of Geosciences to discover how the ocean interactions with the atmosphere will change as the population continues to boom and urbanization around coastal regions increases. Using data collected from NASA, NIST Chemical Webbok, and simple thermodynamics, I estimated how much carbon the ocean could theoretically absorb to become saturated, and the changes in solubility and pH that come with temperature increases and increased higher atmospheric carbon levels. In December, 2018, we presented our findings, including the methods and forms that carbon dioxide takes up in the ocean, and what future implications of these findings suggest.
