The fantasy genre in films has always been difficult to approach from a film producer’s standpoint. Not only is it less accessible compared to usual genres like drama, comedy, or romance, it also often requires a big budget to be able to fully capture the essence of the fantastic world the plot is set on. And while there were a lot of successful fantasy franchises like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, there have been movies that came out short. Here are some of the biggest fantasy movie flops in recent history. Steve Sorensen Select Staffing
Ella Enchanted
Ella Enchanted was Anne Hathaway’s second feature film. And while her performance was praised by critics, it wasn’t enough to carry the shortcomings of the film. People said that the film’s story was silly and the special effects used were very cheap. In the end, the film wasn’t able to earn back its $31 million production budget.
Dungeons and Dragons
If a film was titled Dungeons and Dragons, you’d expect it to sell pretty well considering the success and popularity of the game the movie’s title was based on. However, the movie is considered as one of the worst fantasy movies of all time due to cheap special effects, over the top acting, poor dialogue, and the deviation from the game’s source materials. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
What was expected to be a blockbuster epic turned out to be nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Warner Brothers went ahead and gave the movie a $175 million budget expecting the movie to launch a six-part cinematic universe. Unfortunately, the movie only grossed close to $150 million, the same amount they spent and lost marketing the movie. Steve Sorensen Select Staffing
