Wyoming & Beyond

Don & Bessie Together

Evanston, Wyoming

Guess what - yes time for another move. Don felt the area was getting too crowded and after giving me lots of orders on how to do yard work, he then took off to look for a place for us to live.  After a week I got a call for Gail and me to meet him in Evanston, Wyoming.  We looked at several places before he showed us the nice brick house he really wanted. Gail and I walked in and turned around to walk out. We did not see the vision he did so he had to open our eyes for us. “Knock out this wall, paint, new carpet etc. etc. etc. On and on he went. The house had been on the market for years and no one wanted it. It had just been waiting for Don to come along and see the vision. It did need all he said and we did all of it before moving in. John and Gail helped us load up in Grand Junction and drove to Evanston with us to unload. John said he hoped to never have to move the antique bureau again.

Our time in Evanston was great. The town loved Latter-day Saints and wrote up their doings in the newspaper - weddings, missions, Relief Society Events, and all. The talent in the various wards and the city people combined to put on large plays for the city. I was on the stage crew for South Pacific. Don enjoyed the 25% off on the utility bill the city gave to seniors.

We spent time fixing up our home inside and outside too. We planted 300 Russian Olive trees around the back fence to make a wind break. We got too eager for them to grow and fertilized them - oops that burned them and good bye trees. Getting wiser we planted 10 Blue Spruce along the driveway and took caution and they are still growing. They provide a wind and snow break for the new owners.  Don would shovel snow off the driveway and it piled up higher than his head. It snows a lot in Evanston, Wyoming.

While in Evanston we put in papers for another mission. During our physical the doctor said Don needed to go to a heart specialist in Salt Lake City. We didn’t even know he had a heart problem. So our mission got put on hold. We received a call to go to the Albuquerque New Mexico Mission. We went to see the heart specialist in Salt Lake City and he got us a specialist in Spokane because our sons there said it was time to live close to them for a while. As often as Daddy likes to move it was a good idea. We put our remodeled house on the market. We had three offers in four hours and sold it the next hour. Don’s vision really worked.

Paul, Russell and Kelly came to move us and we moved into the little house of Paul’s for the time being. The doctor in Spokane used the heart paddles on Don and got his heart going better and gave us permission to go on our mission provided we did monthly checks with a doctor in Albuquerque. So our mission began.

The mission papers said we were to bring a pickup (4wheel drive if possible), tire chains, tow chain, shovel, battery cables, and mechanical tools.  Were they trying to tell us something?
