WINTER TRAIL INFO
Local volunteers groom the winter trails by snowmobile pulling tires which provide a wide, smooth and hard surface perfect for winter fat biking, hiking or X-country skiing. The grooming is only done as time permits on an irregular frequency, so they may not always be in optimal condition.
The green bush trails and the red dotted trails on the lakes and marshes are groomed regularly. As noted on the map legend, not all the bush trails are groomed by snowmobile. The red bush trails are primarily hiking trails with frequent foot traffic, giving them a narrow but hard packed base. This offers winter fat bike riders some more challenging routes. The terrain is relatively gentle but there are some short sections with obstacles.
The terrain on the black trails is generally steep and rocky with many obstacles making them unusable by bike. These trails follow the shoreline of the Mattawa river and Long lake.
The ATV trail from Johnson Rd to the pipeline is long and remote. When it is groomed it is really awesome but it does have some wet areas, creek crossings and some steep hills. Once you arrive at the TCPL pipeline right of way, please be advised that you may not continue riding along the pipeline as it is an official OFSC snowmobile trail. You will have to turn around and return on the same trail.
As of January 2026 there is a new groomed trail (Eldora Valley) that descends from the ATV trail down to Long Lake, connecting back up to all the other winter trails. This trail is located near a groomer turnaround point, just before arriving at waypoint ATV2. It is a nice downhill ride to the lake... or a steady uphill walk from the lake.
Shortly before arriving at the TCPL pipeline, there is a hiking trail from waypoint ATV 2 that descends to the Mattawa river just across from the Turtle lake narrows. Unlike the other hiking trails, this trail is not frequently used by many hikers and is not regularly groomed, so it is rarely usable by bike.
As always, use extreme caution on the frozen lakes and marshes. The ice thickness is not monitored and ice conditions may change very rapidly, making them unsafe to travel. Use at your own risk.
ENJOY!
