MNR NOTICE

TO PET OWNERS

The MNR has recently investigated a complaint of a pet owners dog getting caught in a snare when accessing the trail system at the end of Johnson Road. The investigation into the matter determined that the trapper was licensed and the snare was set legally. It has also been determined that a few similar instances have happened in that area over the years. The affected dogs were released unharmed, but arrived there as a result of being ‘at large’ to begin with.

Please be advised that these trails access Crown Lands, and further that a portion of this area is actively trapped under license. When accessing these trails during the open trapping season, dog owners are advised to keep their dogs under control to keep their pets safe. This usually means keeping the animal on a leash. Regardless of the open trapping seasons, it is unlawful to permit a dog to run at large in Ontario.

For listed seasons, refer to the Ontario Trapping Regulations Summary (available online). Pet owners may additionally wish to educate themselves on how to free a pet from the various types of traps used in Ontario, typically the trap types being used in the areas where owners are walking their dogs.
