Lab Information: I got my data points from OpenTopography which provides high resolution and valuable lidar data available to the public. I collected data from two different sites one with a steep mountains and the other with flat ground. Then I used CloudCompare to export the points into a Digital Elevation Models (DEM). I added the DEM data in QGIS and fixed the coordinate system to all the layers. Then I added hillshade, slope, ruggedness, aspect and contour to create the images below. Both of these softwares are completely free and a good alternative to ArgGIS Pro.
The two images above are from Wellsville Mountains, Utah. The top one emphasizes the contour lines while the bottom one shows more detail on the hillshade.
The image above is Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, Florida. I picked this location Florida is known for being really flat. I wanted to show the comparison between a steep and flat location. The biggest difference is the contour lines and the hillshade.
