Whether you've been following my art journey for a while, or you've only recently signed up, thank you for being a part of my newsletter family.
As some of you already know, art is my "second career." After several decades of working as a non-fiction author, professional researcher and television consultant, I decided it was time to set my sights on new challenges. Art transitioned from something I enjoyed once every few years to my full-time focus. This unexpected path has taken me places I never could have predicted - like inclusion in an exhibit at a prestigious San Diego gallery.
My favorite thing, though, is when folks take the time to comment or compliment my art. To those of you who have purchased my work: your support of my small art business means more than I can say.
If any of you have questions about my inspiration, methods, materials or upcoming projects, please don't hesitate to contact me. Until the next newsletter, be well, be happy and be kind (especially to yourself.)
My Halloween treat to two newsletter subscribers is my 2025 fall print "Leaves." This is a limited run of 20 prints, and two of them have been set aside for the first two people who contact me to claim theirs.
There is absolutely no charge - I'm even paying the postage. I just need you to include your preferred shipping address in the email.
If you're not selected to win one of these two prints, no worries! I'm hoping to do a giveaway each month, so you'll have another chance soon.
There are really only three times each year when I purposefully create seasonal art: Christmas, spring and Halloween. As soon as September crests the horizon, I start developing my Halloween designs. This year I particularly enjoyed making my "spooky season" art. Not only did I work in my traditional medium of oil pastel; I also worked in the ancient medium of block printing which I have absolutely fallen in love with.
BUT... that's not the only new love in my life. After two months of winning the trust of an abandoned cat that had been hanging around our deck, we finally convinced him to live indoors. We were worried how it would work. After all, we've got a dog who's been our "only child" for the past five years. Though we introduced the two animals slowly, there's always that worry that something might go terribly wrong. As you can see from the picture, though, Bob the Cat had no problem adjusting to Jax the Dog's bed - or presence in his new home. We are relieved Bob seems to be enjoying our company, especially with cold harsh weather just around the corner.
My 2025 Halloween designs are an homage to classic Hallow's Eve themes: a blood moon glowing in the night sky, a witch's hand gripping a broom, a spooky ghost, a creepy spider weaving its web and - of course - a classic Jack-o'-Lantern. The greeting card is a reproduction of my block print of a cute mouse taking shelter in a warm pumpkin. The journal and coasters feature my original oil pastel art. This year will mark the seventh time my husband and I will travel across this beautiful country, from Pennsylvania to California and back.
The best part, of course, is visiting my family - but almost as equally special are the opportunities I find along the way to draw, paint and take photographs. There is so much beauty in every state, and so much kindness from folks you've never met before and will likely never meet again.
I look forward to sharing highlights of the trip (and hopefully some new art pieces inspired by my travels) in my November newsletter.
Have you ever traveled cross-country? If so, I'd love to hear about the places you've visited and your special experiences.
I'm often asked how I produce my art. These videos will give you a few insights into the creative process for my Halloween items. For more demos, visit my YouTube channel.
