On Wednesday January 15th, in the middle of the STEP exchange week, we organise a keynote event that is free and open to all people interested in teaching and learning. The keynote is held by Professor Paulien Meijer and focuses on the development of autonomy in the context of identity development. Registration for the event is mandatory (with exception of the organisation and participants of STEP): you find more details and instructions below.
In this keynote I will address the relationship between autonomy and identity. Both concepts relate to learning processes that cannot be characterized as showing “steady” or even “straightforward" development. Verhaeghe (2012) claimed that the development of one’s identity entails subsequent phases of “identification” and “separation” (in which autonomy is developed). During adolescence these phases can be seen quite clearly, but they are the essence of each process of identity development. The development of identity, and therefore also the development of autonomy, is less predictable than other learning processes, frequently fluctuates (i.e., go up and down), and sometimes even stagnates or declines - only to show later, rapid growth. I will discuss the development of autonomy in the context of such identity development. In doing so, I will also pay attention to the equal importance of identification, as a predominant focus on the development of autonomy might lead to isolation and loosing connection to peers and, in worst cases, to society. I will claim that for a positive identity to develop, processes of identification and providing possibilities for development of autonomy need to go hand in hand. Finally, I will explore ways of addressing this in education.
Paulien Meijer is full professor at the Radboud Teachers Academy of Radboud University (Nijmegen, The Netherlands). Her research focuses on the learning and development of (student, beginning, and experienced) teachers. In her projects as researcher and PhD supervisor, she stimulates inclusion of schools and educators where possible. Both in her research and teaching activities, she values a focus on creative thinking. Full list of publications ->
The keynote takes place on Wednesday 15 January 2025 at the Elinor Ostrom Building (room N 01.150), located on the Radboud University campus. For information on parking, public transport and accessibility, please visit this page. We welcome you from 7.30 pm. The keynote lecture starts at 7.45 pm and the event will close 9.00 pm at the latest. After the lecture, there will be room for questions and conversation. Since this keynote is part of an international exchange programme for student teachers (STEP), both the lecture and the discussion afterwards are conducted in English.
If you do not participate in STEP, please go here to register for the event. Thank you!
