Stencil

This site shows you how to make stencils. On this site you will also find some theory and history of stencils, their fields of use, Adobe Photoshop tutorial on how to prepare stencils from photos, tools needed to cut your stencils and basics about how to use spray paint. It is meant to support a series of lessons or a study project. There are two types of lessons presented here (lesson A - a quick lesson, Lesson B - project based group work), but feel free to mix and match and be creative, depending on how much time you have or what your goal is.

This study material is made for CODE – (Competence Opportunities for Digital Employment) project.

Lesson A

Each student takes a selfie on a light evenly colored wall as a background. You can edit the photo according to Photoshop Tutorial. Next print the edited photo and cut it out according to instructions provided here. Then you can spray it on a piece of paper or a wall (no vandalism!) or on other surfaces. You can find basic spray paint manual here.

Lesson B

Group project

A group chooses a message that they want to spread (look at theory and fields of use chapter). The message could be social, ecological or something else that is important to the group.

At the end of the project you should have:

  • one small stencil that you can use to mark objects (like chairs or even bags or other). It should serve a purpose as a group "logo".
  • one bigger stencil to apply on a wall. Avoid vandalism. To find a legal wall you can use Facebook for campaigning or something similar.
  • a Facebook group page (or Instagram, Twitter etc.) to document work process and spread your message. Facebook is a good place to find a wall to paint your stencil on as it makes it easier to explain your purpose.

Post your result on a tablet board below to inspire fellow teachers and students.
