Habitat for Humanity Riverside
Kathy Michalak has been the Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity Riverside since April of 2014. She was appointed E.D. after having served on the board of directors for the organization, then retiring from a 35-year career in the newspaper business and joining the organization as an employee in 2009. Michalak quickly earned her Contractor’s license, became the organization’s Construction Manager and is responsible for the creation and expansion of home preservation programs assisting low income elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners keep up their homes, allowing them to age in place safely. The organization now assists over 75 homeowners every year, preserving existing affordable housing in the service area which covers Western Riverside County including the cities of Riverside, Jurupa Valley, Moreno Valley, Corona and Norco.
Habitat for Humanity Riverside currently has 40 affordable homes in development in the cities of Riverside and Jurupa Valley. 10 of those homes are small cottages being developed in partnership with the City of Riverside for their Housing First program.
Michalak has served as a member of the Grants Committee of The Community Foundation of San Bernardino and Riverside County for over 10 years and she also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce where she is Vice Chair for Membership and Marketing. She serves on the Board of Directors for Habitat California, the statewide organization for Habitat for Humanity affiliates and on the Steering Committee for Leadership Riverside.
Michalak has lived in the City of Riverside for 20 years.
Dr. Phil van Haaster received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from University of Southern California (USC) in 1991, his Masters in Engineering from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2012, and his Doctorate in Business Administration from California Baptist University (CBU) in 2020.
Dr. van Haaster joined the College of Engineering at CBU as an Assistant Professor in the Spring of 2020. After graduating from USC, Dr. van Haaster began his career in the field of EMI/RFI shielding, establishing himself as a premier designer of mechanical solutions for an electrical problem and authoring ten U.S. Patents in the field.
After 20 years as a design engineer, Dr. van Haaster shifted his focus to owning the entire business proposition, rising to executive level in a billion-dollar global organization with full management responsibilities for the North American region. His leadership resulted in the expansion of the customer-base, development of multi-region “tiger” teams, and commercialization of disruptive design solutions for the industry. He also contributed as an Board member of an affiliate company, developing military grade products for the U.S. government.
Assistant Professor van Haaster’s research interests are in the field of collaborative design processes and knowledge spillover. He and his wife, Christina, have been married for 27 years and are blessed with six children. He enjoys hiking, camping, obstacle course events, reading, and family time. Dr. van Haaster and his family currently attend The Grove Community in Riverside and he desires to impact the world for Jesus by teaching students how to be superior engineers/innovators who model servant leadership and glorify God in the workplace.
Neil is an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Riverside. He oversees the office's Public Safety Division, which contributes to an outstanding quality of life in Riverside by managing neighborhood livability issues that are critical to the City of Riverside. Litigation lawyers work with staff to file public nuisance actions, prosecute violations of the Riverside Municipal Code and move distressed properties into receiverships to improve the quality of life for Riverside residents and businesses. This Division also closely advises and works with the men and women of the Riverside Police Department, the Riverside Fire Department, and the Code Enforcement Division.
Neil received his B.A. in Political Science from U.C. Riverside. He earned his J.D. from Loyola Law School on a partial scholarship and was a Note and Comment Editor of the Loyola Law Review. Neil’s published law review article was cited by the California Court of Appeal, the Texas Court of Appeals, American Law Reports (A.L.R.), and California Criminal Law (Witkin). Since being sworn in as an attorney here in Riverside, Neil has tried 18 cases (including 15 as sole trial counsel) and completed 10 binding arbitrations as sole trial counsel.

Technology and the exciting part of what Motorola was developing in the wireless world. The historical history of the company
and the development from the car batteries to Handie Talkies, TV's, Pagers, Phones, Networks, etc.. That it was a family run
business established in 1924 and the strong foundation for long-term ownership and growth, with the attributes of stewardship,
perseverance, determination, professionalism and integrity.

Through a high school friend who was a 3rd grade teacher who decided to take a second career with Motorola and invited me to be interviewed.

What advice would you give to students interested in your field?
To understand that the modern telecommunication world is truly one of the most exciting and dynamic industries growing today, from networking, wireless, data and cyber security opportunities. The industry is challenging and always changing with major developments and transformation of the wireless/telecommunication world. Have a good understanding and focus on technologies used in wireless, wired and cellular services for voice and data.

Gus has over 25 years of private and public sector experience managing organizations and complex projects. After obtaining his Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, he spent his first 21 years of his professional career in the private sector working for Motorola Solutions. At Motorola Solutions he held several roles from Systems Engineering to Engineering Manager to Project Manager, successfully managing and implementing complex communication networks including the County’s Public Safety Enterprise Communications (PSEC) system, Los Angeles Police Department, and the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable County System Long Term Evolution project. In 2016, Gus joined Riverside County Information Technology (RCIT) as an Information Technology Manager where he accepted the challenge to manage and provide leadership to the PSEC Division and transformed it into a customer focused and collaborative organization that our employees and users are proud to be part of. In 2019, he was promoted into his current role of Assistant Chief Information Officer (ACIO) responsible for the County network, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system, badge access and camera security systems, and the PSEC radio system.

During Tom Mullen’s two decades of service to Riverside County, he has severed in multiple executive roles including Chief Deputy Treasurer-Tax Collector, Deputy Director for Administrative Services within the Riverside County Transportation and Land Management Agency and Assistant Chief Information Officer. Currently Tom serves as Riverside County’s Chief Data Officer, a role he has held since 2015.
Tom leads a team of professionals that provide the residents of Riverside County information, tools and knowledge they need to improve their lives, the community we share, and strengthen their trust in local government.
Tom is a veteran of the United States Army Reserves and holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) in workforce education and organizational development from Southern Illinois University (SIU), and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB).

Mark D. Annas, Emergency Services Administrator for the City of Riverside Fire Department – Office of Emergency Management has served in different capacities in the field of Emergency Management since 2007. Mr. Annas has worked several major incidents in the States of Texas and California including Super Bowl 51, hurricanes Ike and Harvey; winter weather storms; vegetation fires; hazardous materials incidents; civilian and military plane crashes, wide-spread flooding events; and other severe weather related hazards. His area of emphasis has focused on whole community preparedness, public information, and homeland security/emergency management administration, which help prepare for, respond to, recover from and mitigate natural, technological and man-made disasters. Mr. Annas graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. Mr. Annas completed FEMA's first National Emergency Management, Basic Academy in 2011, is a 2016 graduate of their Advanced Academy and completed FEMA’s Executive Academy in August 2018. Mr. Annas was elected to serve on the National Homeland Security Association (NHSA) Board of Directors in 2019.
Dr. Anthony Donaldson received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1979, 1982 and 1990, respectively. In 1994 he received an M.A. in Missions and Evangelism from the Asbury Theological Seminary.
In the summer of 2006, Dr. Donaldson was hired by California Baptist University (CBU) as the founding dean of a new school of engineering. The program has grown from 53 students and one faculty in the fall of 2007 to over 700 students and 43 full time faculty and staff in the spring of 2017. Degrees are offered in Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Construction Management, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering and Engineering (with concentrations in Pre-Law, Agricultural, Business, and Global Applications). Graduate programs are offered in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Data Science and Knowledge Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Software Engineering. In the fall of 2016 he was chosen as the Honorary Technical Director for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Corona, and the Guidestone Faculty of the Year for CBU.
From 1998 to 2006, he served as professor of electrical engineering and the director of the engineering programs at Seattle Pacific University where he led a successful accreditation effort and was responsible for numerous innovations and improvements in curriculum and facilities.
From 1994 to 1996 Dr. Donaldson and his family were in Bangalore, India, the “Silicon Valley of Asia”, where he raised venture capital for a native Indian’s vision and started a consultancy business in the telecommunications area.
In graduate school at Texas Tech University Dr. Donaldson worked on the “Star Wars” pulsed power project sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. His research in modeling electrode erosion in High Energy pulsed switches won critical acclaim and resulted in over 40 peer reviewed articles and conference presentations as well as a patent for a new type of material. The Chief Scientist of the Air Force who served on his committee remarked that it was an outstanding achievement. He won the International Pulsed Power Student award given to the best pulsed power student worldwide, the National Plasma Science award, a NATO sponsorship, the TTU outstanding EE graduate student award and the graduate student teaching award twice.
Originally from Texas, Dr. Donaldson enjoys music, film, puzzles, archaeology, reading and cross cultural cuisine and experiences. He is married to CBU business professor Dr. Darla Donaldson. They have two adult children, Daniel and Deborah, both of which are CBU College of Engineering graduates.
