Welcome Address

Gordon Bourns

Chairman and CEO , Bourns Inc.

Gordon Bourns grew up working weekends and summers at the family business, Bourns, Inc., which his parents, Marlan and Rosemary Bourns founded in their Pasadena garage in 1947. He received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of California, Los Angeles before he became a Bourns employee in 1973. During his 46-year career with Bourns, he has held positions in sales, marketing, engineering, quality assurance and manufacturing, as well as general management. He was elected Chairman of the Board in December 1988 by the Company’s Board of Directors and was elected President in 1990.

Bourns, Inc. is a worldwide electronic company which manufactures more than 10,000 different products at 18 domestic and international facilities, with over 6,200 employees. He currently focuses much of his attention on strategic planning to accomplish the Company’s goals to achieve sustained profitable growth. He takes an active role in new product development and the selection and implementation of acquisitions. Gordon also leads the Bourns commitment to the Bourns Production System, which encompasses the six-sigma quality and lean manufacturing processes, to assure Bourns meets or exceeds customer expectations for high quality products and services. A significant part of the strategic planning process is focused on anticipating and satisfying the needs of customers in its primary markets, Automotive, Consumer, Industrial and Communications.


Gordon is committed to giving back to the community of Riverside a portion of the many benefits he, his family and Bourns, Inc. have received from it. He is a champion of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), serving as the President of STEP (Science & Technology Education Partnership), a consortium of Inland Southern California educators, business leaders and government officials, whose annual two-day STEP Conference piques the interest of 5,000 K-12 students in STEM careers. STEP also offers three week-long STEM Summer Learning Labs providing experiential learning about good STEM careers in our community.


Gordon is greatly blessed in his 41-year marriage to his wife, Jill. Together they are the proud parents of four children and active grandparents of six grandchildren.

John Robertson has been a science teacher in RUSD since 2004 and also served as Instructional Services Specialist for Science from 2012 - 2018. He has partnered with Gordon Bourns in designing and implementing the STEM Summer Learning Labs over the past 6 years.

Richard Hart is the president of Loma Linda University Health, a post he has held since 2008. In this role, he oversees operations of the organization’s eight schools and six hospitals, as well as collaborative and consulting relationships with organizations worldwide.

Dr. Richard Hart currently serves as President of Loma Linda University Health – the umbrella corporation that includes the enterprise’s academic, healthcare, and research organizations. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from LLU School of Medicine in 1970, followed by a Doctor of Public Health in International Health at Johns Hopkins University in 1977, also becoming Board certified in Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Hart has served Loma Linda University since 1972 in a variety of ways that include Chair of the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Sciences, Director of the Center for Health Promotion, Chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Preventive Medicine, Dean of the School of Public Health, and President (previously Chancellor) and CEO of the University.

Dr. Hart’s vision extends beyond the walls of Loma Linda University not only to the local communities, but also to the villages and towns, the hospitals and mission clinics, in the farthest reaches of our globe. He has served as Chief of Party for a USAID project in Tanzania where he developed a national maternal and child health program that is still a model for Africa today. His passion for humanitarian service has led to the development of a variety of programs at Loma Linda University including, Students for International Mission Service (SIMS) and Social Action Community Health System (SACHS)–a local low-cost clinic for the medically underserved; and more recently, to the establishment of the San Manuel Gateway College, part of LLU’s San Bernardino Campus.

Dr. Hart also serves as president of Adventist Health International (AHI), a management corporation established to restore Adventist mission hospitals worldwide.

Beverly J. Buckles, MSW, DSW, is Dean of the School of Behavioral Health at Loma Linda University, LLUH Vice President for Behavioral Health Education. She is the recipient of the 2010 Social Worker of the Year, California Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers for: 1) the promotion of partnerships between academia and mental health systems and services in California; 2) leadership in the transformation of mental health curricula throughout California infusing recovery and anti-stigma content used by the national Council on Social Work Education to establish criteria for mental health curricula for MSW programs in the US; and 3) dedication to international disaster preparation and response.

In 2006, she received the Loma Linda University Centennial Vanguard Award for her founding leadership of the University’s International Behavioral Health Trauma Team. Since 1995, the LLUH Behavioral Health Trauma Team has responded to natural disasters and conflict zones in over 60 countries around the world; including but not limited to the 2005 Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, earthquakes in China, Haiti and Nepal, incidences of industrial violence, the aftermath of the civil war in the Côte D’Ivoire, Africa, the military conflict in the Ukraine, Sierra Leone Ebola crisis, support for survivors and employees directly impacted by the San Bernardino shooting, and many more.

Dr. Buckles’ continues to be actively involved in the implementation of resiliency methodologies around the world and at home to support individuals, families, communities, organizations and governments improve treatment interventions and consumer outcomes.

Dr. Paul Herrmann has been interested in science and technical things since he was in the 4th grade. At that age, he liked to play with magnets, mechanical toys and even chemicals and electricity when no one was supervising too closely. Fortunately, he managed to find jobs, academic programs and ultimately a career where those interests could be pursued. He has been employed as a printer, boiler room operator and waste water treatment technician as well as a research scientist and physician.

He currently chairs the Department of Pathology and Human Anatomy and directs the Loma Linda University Medical Center Clinical Laboratory.

April Wilson, MD, MPH completed both her undergraduate and graduate medical education at Loma Linda University Health and became a faculty member upon completion of residency. Initially, she focused on medical student education and clinical practice. Then Dr. Wilson took a few years to focus almost exclusively on being a Mom to her 3 children, who are now ages 11, 9 and 5. In 2017, she returned to work full time as a residency program director. In 2018, Dr. Wilson was appointed Chairwoman of the Preventive Medicine Department at LLUH and become medical director of Employee Health in 2019. In those roles, she is responsible for overseeing the health of all the employees and students on the LLU campus with regard to COVID-19. She enjoys public speaking at her home institution, nationally, and internationally. In her free time, she enjoys reading historical fiction, wakeboarding and extending hospitality through good food and conversation.
