What does it typically look like?
Today, the online 5-day science-oriented STEMastery summer camp concluded and our team is instilled with joy to say that all the SITs had a phenomenal work ethic and an inquisitive nature towards science, resulting in exceptional projects and experiments!
On Monday, the Introductory Science CLs taught the Scientific Method and the SITs applied their knowledge by conducting and reporting experiments in a science fair-style environment.
On Tuesday, the Biology CLs taught the Digestive System and the SITs designed the passage of the Digestive System, and performed a ‘test run’ by mimicking the 6 steps of the Digestive System in a plastic bag - consisting of mixtures of food and fluids.
On Wednesday, the Chemistry CLs taught Physical and Chemical Changes and the SITs applied their knowledge by creating ice cream and an artificial representation of snow, using Endothermic and Exothermic reactions as well as their knowledge regarding States of Matter.
On Thursday, the Physics CLs taught Newton’s 3 laws of Motion and the SITs performed an Egg Drop to see Inertia (Law 1), created a Newton’s Cradle to demonstrate, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction (Law 2) and designed & made a Balloon Car to demonstrate acceleration occurs when a force acts on a mass (Law 3)
On Friday, the Earth Science CLs taught Ecosystems and the SITs applied their knowledge by creating a scientifically accurate diorama after a carefully consideration of the Zoology and Botany of Rainforests, Marine, Arctic Tundra and Deserts.
Will this count as in my son/daughter(s) grade after the summer break?
No, this is entirely independent of the school system and will not count towards students' marks after the summer. The goal is to provide students with an increased compression for the next school year.
What curriculum was used to create activities?
The activities were prepared by students who have experienced the grade 6-7 BC curriculum and follows the learning expectations outlined in the BC curriculum.
How are the topics going to be taught?
All activities have been modified to be taught over zoom by our group of mentors at STEMastery.
