This is an exciting opportunity for our 4th and 5th grade students to strengthen their scientific knowledge and participate in a county level Science Competition ! In addition, many non-competitive events go on throughout the day making a festival atmosphere. The Science Field Day is held in the spring each year at Lakeside Middle School.

A team of 16 students will be selected from a pool of interested students in 4th and 5th grades to represent Morning Creek Elementary at the county level competition. Each student may choose to participate in 1 or 2 events.
We highly encourage parent participation to coach/mentor students.
Signup closes on Friday, January 24, 2020.
- Anatomy: Two (2) contestants will work as a team to answer questions regarding the structure and function of the human body systems.
- Barge Building: A team of two(2) students will construct a barge using heavy-duty aluminum foil that can support a large weight of cargo (stone pebbles). This event will also test the team’s weight estimation skills.
- Catapult Competition: A team of two(2) students will build, calibrate and fire their own free-standing (not handheld) trajectory device that must be capable of propelling a tennis ball at a target placed between 2 and 7 meters.
- Changing Earth: Two (2) contestants will work as a team to identify diagrams, and answer questions related to Earth Science. Students will create a cross-section of a topographic map.
- Circuits: Two (2) contestants will work as a team to build a circuit from a schematic using a “Snap Circuits Jr.” set. They will be tested on electronics, electricity, circuit symbols and components.
- Don't Bug Me: Two (2) contestants will work as a team to answer questions. They will be asked to:
- Know the characteristics of Arthropods
- Classify, identify, and name major Classes of Arthropods and Orders of Insects
- Label various external/internal body parts including leg segments, antennae, body segments, mouth types, major organs.
- Describe characteristics of various Insect Orders
- Describe the different types of Insect Life-Cycles
- Egg Drop: This is a non-competitive event. The objective is to have a two-person team construct a package to protect an egg (from breaking) which will be dropped free fall from a height selected by the tournament director.
- Mirror Magic: Three team members, each equipped with their own mirror, cooperate to bounce a light beam from a maglite flashlight onto a predetermined target.
- Make It, Take It Paddle Boats: Two (2) students make a paddleboat out of the materials (styrofoam, rubber bands, masking tape etc.) provided at the site. The winner will be the boat that travels the farthest.
- Perplexing Powders: Students identify mystery powders.
- Simple Machines: Students will design and build a Rube Goldberg contraption utilizing as many simple machines as possible.
- Starry, Starry Night: Two (2) contestants will work as a team to answer questions regarding space facts and star & constellation identification.
- Structures : This event is to test students' ability to build strong, stable, reproducible structures from common materials. No spectators will be allowed for this event.
- Tin Can Racers: A team consisting of two team members will compete against other teams in a distance race with tin can racers.
- Triathlon Relay:Four(4) contestants will work as a team to answer questions from Brain Quest Cards – 5th & 6th Grade editions – science questions only -before a physical activity/obstacle course.
- Rocking Out: Two (2) contestants will work as a team to identify and categorize rocks and minerals.
