The binary numeral system is a way to write numbers using only two digits, 0 and 1. There are many types of binary code, such as braille and morse code. The binary numeral system has existed for centuries. Binary was invented by many people but the modern binary number system is credited to Gottfried Leibniz in 1679, a German mathematician. Binary has been used in nearly everything electronic; from calculators to supercomputers. This code is used to send, receive and store information because electronic information does not last very long. For the information to exist for long periods of time without a power supply, it needs to be stored physically within the electronic device’s hardware. As it turns out, binary code is easy to convert from electronic information to physical information because only two kinds of physical objects are needed, 0s and 1s.
