Assignment description: We were supposed to research and then create a model of a certain style of architecture. Everyone in class was assigned a style to then present on. I chose the modern style and researched it based on the questions my teacher provided. For the model I was supposed to create a structure that showed off the most noticeable features of modern architecture.
What I learned: I learned that there is a difference between modern and contemporary architecture, along with the fact that modern architecture ended in the late 20th century. I also learned that there are examples all over the world, rather than just in suburbs. There was a lot more that went into modernism than I originally thought too. I learned about the more distinct parts of modern architecture as well.
What I need to work on: I need to work on scaling my objects and thinking about how something will look in the big picture because this house was a lot bigger than intended. I would also change the material I made the house out of because foam board was incredibly difficult to get nice clean edges. (I ended up taping the edges and spray painting the walls white).

Assignment description: I had to research and then fill out a form of where I want to be in 20 years. (Theoretically). I then had to create a poster board/vision board that detailed everywhere I want to be in 20 years. Then we had to present the poster to the class and we got graded on it.
What I learned: I learned about all the different careers related to Civil Engineering, and the educational needs for a career. There were a lot more people involved in civil engineering than I thought would be involved. I also learned what schools were ABET accredited and I used that to decide where I would go to college. In addition, I realized i had no real idea of where I wanted to be in life, just vague notions.
What I need to work on: I need to work on my presentation skills because I stumbled a lot when I was presenting. I also need to work on the design for the poster because I could have done a lot more. I would probably have changed career I wanted to have in 20 years. I thought I had to make it based on the form we filled out before the project. I should have gotten clarification on that. I need to decide exactly where I want to be in the future because that was the one thing I really struggled with in this project.

Assignment description: The goal of this assignment was to understand the different components of a wall and roof. I had to take notes over how the walls are built and the different types of roofs. From there I had to decide on a roof style and then create a model of the framing of a house. Attached to the frame would be the different exterior additions like the vapor barrier and siding. I then labeled everything and made a key to identify what each part of the house frame was. In addition to that we had to make a one page fact sheet over the advantages and disadvantages of that type of roof.
What I learned: I learned the importance of every part of a wall, structurally. The measurements on each part of the house had to be precise otherwise the house just didn't work right. Physically making each of the walls was also a lot more work than I thought it would be. In addition to that, I didn't know that so many things went into building the walls or the roof.
What I need to work on: If I were to do this again, I would have a more solid plan for how I was going to accomplish it and I would use a lot less glue. I would have created the roof truss with a more severe angle, or at least created them in an easier way than I did. The straightness of the studs would also be more regimently rigid. I need to work on having more finesse with the small details of my projects.

Assignment description: The assignment was to create a tiny house design for an addition to a shed. I was supposed to interpret the drawings given, and then identify the components of a wood residential system, and identify and describe the purpose of a floor plan, wall section, and elevation view for construction. I determined the dimensions and basic components of the shed, and designed a tiny house that fit within the requirements. I then created a floor plan, with furniture inside too, a front and side elevation sketch and the wall section composition.
What I learned: I learned how hard it was to design a house in such small constraints. The side and front elevation were new too. There were also different materials that had their own pattern on drawings that I learned. It was actually kind of hard to design the floor plan to be usable and functionable. The wall section drawing was also difficult to complete because I had never done one before.
What I need to work on: I need to work on designing the layout of rooms because that is what took me the longest on this project. The wall section was also pretty hard. I had never done them before so it took me a long time to decide what the wall should be. I think overall I need to work on my time management because this project took me a long time to do because I kept shifting from one part to another.

Assignment Description: To design a house based on habitat for humanities guidelines along with my clients guidelines. The first thing I did was get my clients criteria, then I created a couple rough sketches that reflected what the client wanted. From there, with multiple meetups with my client I created the house in Revit for my client along with furnishing it with the necessities.
What I learned: I learned how to navigate Revit with more efficiency along with learning the guidelines and house codes for houses in Indiana. In addition to that, I learned how important it is to stay on the schedule mapped out for me at the beginning of the project, barring any major distractions it is good to stay on schedule. I had to use everything I learned in previous assignments to complete this house design, and it was great to see how everything tied in with this project.
What I need to work on: I need to work on my time management, I had a lot of free time during this assignment and that could have been used to improve my project but I just ended up procrastinating the finishing details until the end. Revit is also still a bit of a mystery to use because most of the things I used were shown to me, and I didn't really deviate from the instructions given in regard to Revit. The last thing that I need to work on is to stay focused on what the client wants rather than what I think the building should be. The original plan was for the house to be a ranch style with intricate details, but it ended up more contemporary and that is my fault because I deviated from the original plan unknowingly until the end.

Assignment Description: To design a visual aid to illustrate the history, function and use of a structural form. We were given an architectural form to create a project, and I got Corbel arches. There needed to be the history, use and pictures in the presentation. I needed to also have a 3D form, and an example of the use of the form.
What I learned: I learned that 11 year old legos are incredibly brittle after not being used in so long. On a brighter note, there are a lot more structural forms out there than I originally believed. Tension, compression and shear forces also are the things that make or break a structure, and any member of the structure can have any combination of those forces. Simple structures like stones and block of stone can build structures that last hundreds of years ad that is amazing.
What I need to work on: My video editing skills could use a lot of work, along with my planning skills because I started filming with no preparation at all. When I did finally create my video, I stuttered some so I need to work on my speaking skills when not talking to a group. I think that the video ended up alright because the edits were good, but some of my facts were wrong so I should have probably outlined everything before starting to film.

Assignment Description: To build a dream house to the constraints given. We are allowed creative free reign to make whatever we want as long as it is realistic. We need to then document what we make and take pictures and screenshots of the different sheets of the house. This is a lot like the Habitat for Humanity house in terms of requirements. I had to plan what I was doing, execute it and then present it to the teacher.
What I learned: I learned that even though I have done many projects in Revit already that I am definitely no expert. There were a lot of problems with creating this house, like Revit crashing or forgetting to save before it crashes. I did learn that I want a very simple house when I grow up and that I will probably end up with a house similar to this. Creating a house for the future also brought up some ideas about where I want to be in the future and what that will look like. Using previous knowledge of costs and determining how to conceptually build this house, I think that it can be achievable.
What I need to work on: I need to work on my originality because this house ended up looking a lot like my Habitat for Humanity house. I also need to work on my Revit skills because this took a lot of time to figure out, especially the schedules on the sheets. I also need to really take a look at where I want to be in say 20 years and what I will need to do to actually acquire this house. I need to work on my time management too because this project took a long time to complete. It ended up taking about 3 months from beginning to end when it should have taken a couple of weeks at most.

Assignment Description: For this assignment we are repurposing a brownfield into a useable library following guidelines given to us by the teacher and the building codes in the area. We are to plan the project and follow the timeline given, we are given creative free reign with the design of the library as long as we have the required implements and then we will present this at the end of our design process. We started with going over the basics of commercial building, and this project is meant to reinforce the idea in a productive way.
What I learned: I learned how difficult it is to create something like the green roof in Revit because I didn't know the specifics when it came to building roofs before. I also learned the different wall and roof types for commercial buildings and how alike they are to residential buildings sometimes. Creating the Gantt chart was a challenge because I got the dates mixed up at the beginning, but I can confidently say that I know how to create one now. Using revit for the interior and upstairs design and furniture was actually a lot easier than I anticipated.
What I need to work on: I need to work on having patience when Revit crashes and my work is deleted because I hadn't saved in the last five minutes. Along with not getting distracted by the people around me because I don't get any of my work done in class., I could improve my limited knowledge of what the different functions of revit are for future use. The green roof is what really tripped me up, so I will need to get better at distinguishing different layers on Revit and how to make sure that I don't lose the plants constantly. I also need to work on my time management because by the end of this project I was rushing instead of taking my time to really think through the building design and layout.
