Process:
Research: Was done for Worship and Rebellion to expand arguments by including more diverse examples. In Hangin' Around, was done to accurately depict howler monkeys.
Media tests: Were used to decide which media had the best effect for specific purposes, such as adding a tint to magazine pictures, creating the brick wall, and painting on wood.
Inspiration: I drew inspiration from places I've been, books, movies, and songs I know, and the news.
Sketches: I used sketches as a rough plan for Hangin' Around and Rebellion. For Worship, I planned one window at a time, using pictures I had cut out.
Message/symbolism:
Hangin' Around argues that authority is inescapable using:
-Newsprint, representative of media and control through information.
-Howler monkeys (outfits, monkey on back).
-Misrepresentation of colours, howler monkeys.
Worship explains the dangers of authority.
-The images in the collage represent specific examples.
-Stained glass represents the role religion plays in authority.
Rebellion lists ways of fighting authority.
-Red represents revolution.
-specific examples of fighting authority are cited.
-Graffiti is highly featured.
Significant elements:
Line- was important in Worship and Hangin' Around. I used sharp angles created by these lines for a frantic atmosphere meant to symbolise the overbearing feeling of having no control over oneself.
Pattern- was important in Hangin' Around and Rebellion. I used it to represent order, similarly to the way I used line. In Hangin' Around, the newsprint creates a chaotic example of regular pattern. In Rebellion, the bricks create regular pattern, which I intended to represent a sense of control and order.
Colour- I used very vibrant, intense colours in all 3 of these pieces. In Hangin' Around, this symbolised misinformation. It also created some unity between the pieces.
Movement- was most important in Hangin' Around, as the composition draws the viewer's eye into the hollow in the forest, where the monkeys' eyes can be seen.
Reflection:
What I did well:
-Making all three artworks look cohesive.
-Communicating my theme using symbolism.
-Using the elements + principles of art to make appealing work.
What I could have done better:
-Time management and neatness.
Message/symbolism:
The Dudeicorn explains that there is more to most people than meets the eye, using:
-The actual transformation from a threatening, off-putting man into a colourful, fun unicorn.
- This shows that as we get to know someone, they can transform before our eyes.
- The increase in size with each new stage represents a growing idea of the individual's personality.
The House shows that everything has its place in the world, regardless of its current state.
-Shows a transformation through time of a house, from newly built to abandoned.
-The season of each painting (spring, fall, summer) represents the state of the house.
-In each painting, the house is at peace. In the final one, it is one with nature, and is being inhabited by animals and plants.
Street Views illustrates the change in perception and attitude that perspective can cause.
-Shows a positive point of view on the left side, and negative on the right.
-Both scenes show the exact same things in a literal sense, but they are perceived differently. For example, every building has a pipe, and every car makes pollution, but pollution is only shown on the right side.
-Both sides have their ups and downs; the optimistic side enjoys their lives, while the pessimistic side sees problems and takes action.
Process:
Research: Was done for The Dudeicorn to understand the mythology of werewolves. Was done for The House to accurately portray historic architecture. Was done for Street Views to accurately portray cars and buildings, and to understand the effects of perception.
Media tests: Were used to decide how to add glitter to the third painting in The Dudeicorn, and to decide how to add brick texture in The House, as well as to decide how to cover up small mistakes in The House. Were used to choose the most optimal colours for Street Views.
Inspiration: I was inspired by werewolf myths and transformations in popular culture, and by My Little Pony for The Dudeicorn. Additionally, my affinity for drawing crazy monsters inspired me to create this piece. Century homes in Southern Ontario, and the view they offer of the past, inspired me to create The House. I was inspired by the difference in attitude and expression that I have seen point of view cause.
Sketches: The sketches for The Dudeicorn were originally doodles I drew during class. I drew rough versions of the three paintings in The House, at a smaller scale and in colour. I made rough sketches for Street Views, but did most of my planning in pencil on the final copy.
Significant elements:
Texture- was used in The Dudeicorn for fur, hair, and wrinkled skin texture. Used in The House to show brick texture using the actual texture of the paper to create simulated texture. Used in Street Views rough texture of smoke.
Colour- I used very vibrant colour in The Dudeicorn. The colours in the backgrounds are analagous. The first stage uses complementary colours, the second a double complement scheme, and the third a split complement triad. In The House, it was used to imitate a black and white photograph. Street Views uses bright colours on the left side and dull ones on the right, illustrating the difference that perception can cause.
Line- I used thin, expressive lines to create simulated hair and fur texture in The Dudeicorn. I used dark, thick, structural contour lines in the first two stages of The House. For the third one, these contour lines were expressive, showing the aging of the house. In Street Views, straight, structural contour lines were used for the buildings and the street. Organic contour lines were used for people and cars.
Contrast- Exists in The House between the intense, dark contour lines and the light, vibrant colours, and between the structural appearance of the first stage and the expressive appearance of the final stage. Is a prominent element of Street Views. Most notable is the contrast between bright and dull colours.
Reflection:
What I did well:
-Experimenting with new media and techniques (like architectural drawing and inventing new creatures).
-communicating my theme using the elements and principles.
- making appealing artworks that still have a message.
- attention to detail.
What I could have done better:
-Time management and neatness.
