This blog chronicles the mural I am painting in the resource room at EDHS. The mural is meant to increase the school community's involvement in the arts. I will post pictures of my process, and will update the blog every time I make some headway in the project.
It's done! I added the groundhog, the turtle, the male red winged blackbird, and the lily pad flowers yesterday, and today I added highlights to the trees, lily pads, and reeds, and added the female red winged blackbird. I can't believe I got such a big wall painted, and I'm overjoyed with the outcome. Below are some closer pictures of the four animals I've finished this week. I've added a picture of the complete mural to the top of this page.
The mural is definitely coming along! I did the bulrushes, flowers, lily pads, the rest of the grass texture, and darker water this week. All that's left to do is a turtle, a groundhog, two red winged blackbirds (one male, one female), tree bark, and maybe a deer face- I haven't decided whether I'm going to paint over the current version yet.
I got the base coat for the stream's motion done today. Alexa helped me with the back layer of grass today, too. The contrast between our painting styles is very obvious; I think this is a really cool result.
I've gotten a lot done on the mural in the last two days! I added the rocks in the brook, started working on the grass texture, and sketched in a few other details, like a groundhog, a turtle, and rushing water. I have added closer pictures of some details below. Once I've finished the grass texture, I will add reeds, bullrushes, and flowers.
Here's a closer look at the grass I've painted. I added yellow to the base coat for the highlights, and brown and blue to it for the shadows.
Shown here are three of the rocks I painted today and yesterday (and a turtle sketch). I initially wanted them to look more cartoony, but I decided to add some texture.
Did I just pull the best prank I have ever and will ever execute? Yes, I did. Was it worth the hour and a half I spent painting this monstrosity? Probably not. Does this really look like Mister Teeter? Maybe a little. Nonetheless, I gave it my best try, and I can't wait to hear about how much he hates it. I got the deer (aside from the face) finished, too.
After a very, very busy few weeks, I'm back to painting the mural. I finished the base coat today with help from Alexa, and added a few details, too. For instance, I added some trees, grass and water texture, and sketched out a deer.
I started and finished this guy today. It was specifically requested by my clients that I include a dragon in the mural, since our original idea was a dragon. I worked on him for a total of three and a half hours today, and I'm very happy with the way he has turned out. He is purple and gold to match EDHS's colours. I'm going to pretend that I didn't accidentally put his hind legs on backwards. Technically, backwards is subjective since dragons are made up. The picture below shows him on the full wall.
I stayed after school today to work on the mural, and finished the base coat for the back layer of forest. I'm going to go back and add some details once I've done the base coat for every layer of the wall.
I finished the sky today! I'm very happy with the way it's turned out. Next up is the back layer of forest.
I started painting the wall today. I'm working from the back to the front, so the sky is first. I spent a long time experimenting with different methods; I used a roller, several brushes, and finally my bare hands. It was the only way I could evenly apply the paint. This is the top right half of the wall.
Here is some inspiration for my mural. It will be of a brook in a forest, so these are going to be very helpful as reference pictures. I expect to run into some difficulty while painting the running water, so I will probably rely on these pictures.
After coming up with three ideas, I decided this was my best concept. I just finished the plan.
I'm about to start painting a mural for my Art in the Community project. The mural will be in the resource room at EDHS, and will help provide a calm environment for students. It will have a nature theme. This is the wall I am going to paint.
