ARTIST STATEMENT

CONCISE

Conceptually rooted in using art as therapy and ecofeminism, my artistic practice advocates for the recognition of Nature as a living entity, deserving respect and protection, while aligning with the ethos of service and speaking to our collective responsibility toward the planet and one another. My work examines the intersections of personal experience and broader societal constructs, such as consumerism, gender roles, romantic love, doctrines, and time. This perspective is intertwined with concerns for the oppressed—both human and non-human species—emphasizing the urgent need for equitable relationships within our shared ecosystems.

IN-DEPTH

My work explores and documents the lived experiences and concepts that emerged during a transformative journey of self-discovery and healing. This journey began as I navigated the profound heartbreak of divorce and undertook the challenge of thru-hiking the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST). Traversing 1,130 miles (1,818 km) through Florida's remarkably diverse ecosystems, I gained a deeper appreciation for nature’s restorative power and rediscovered my own resilience. These experiences profoundly influence my artistic practice, shaping a body of work that intersects personal narrative with broader societal constructs such as romantic relationships, consumerism, gender, family, and the perception of time.

Conceptually rooted in ecofeminism, my artistic practice advocates for the recognition of Nature as a living entity, deserving respect and protection, while aligning with the ecofeminist ethos of service and interconnectedness. This perspective is intertwined with concerns for the oppressed—both human and non-human species—emphasizing the urgent need for equitable relationships within our shared ecosystems. This intersection of advocacy and artistry drives my desire to create meaningful work that speaks to our collective responsibility toward the planet and one another.

The visual language of my work draws influence from the Baroque and Romantic movements, which I reinterpret to address contemporary concerns. The dramatic interplay of light and darkness (applied or conceptually), emotional intensity, and dynamic compositions characteristic of these periods resonate within my creations. At the core of my practice is the act of drawing and self-expression, foundational tools through which I translate complex ideas into tangible, representational works. I view working as an artist not only as an act but as a meditative process that bridges the gap between internal reflection and external representation.

My diversified studio practice includes the use of new, repurposed, and traditional materials. These range from found materials, wood, metal, and fabric to ink, charcoal, pastels, acrylics, oils, and paper. This varied material palette allows me to create across multiple disciplines, producing drawings, paintings, prints, three-dimensional works, and installations. The intentional use of repurposed materials underscores themes of sustainability and transformation, aligning with the ecofeminist principles that underpin my conceptual approach.

A recurring subject in my work is that of Mile Markers, inspired by specific locations found on the FNST. These markers serve as metaphors for pivotal moments of introspection, connection, and growth experienced during my hike. Each piece captures the essence of these locations, evoking the sights, sounds, and emotional resonance of those moments. In addition, my work portrays people in my life and explores emotional states that I have experienced, presenting a nuanced tapestry of relationships, memory, and identity.

My work is an ongoing dialogue between the personal and the universal. It reflects my journey of healing and self-discovery while addressing broader societal and environmental concerns. Through this work, I aim to inspire empathy, foster understanding, and contribute to a collective vision of a more equitable and harmonious world for all species.
