Identifying Rent-Sharing Using Firms’ Energy Input Mix
(with Matthias Mertens and Georg Neuschäffer)
Conditionally accepted at the Journal of the European Economic Association
This paper develops a novel approach to identifying rent-sharing by exploiting variation in firms’ energy input mixes. The analysis provides new evidence on how energy cost shocks are transmitted to wages and contributes to the literature on firm-level wage setting and surplus sharing.
Industry Mix, Local Labor Markets, and the Incidence of Trade Shocks
(with Jens Stegmaier and Moises Yi)
Journal of Labor Economics (2024), 42(3)
We study how local industry composition shapes labor market exposure to international trade shocks. The paper highlights substantial heterogeneity in employment and wage effects across local labor markets, driven by differences in industry structure.
Organized Labor, Labor Market Imperfections, and Employer Wage Premia
(with Sabien Dobbelaere, Boris Hirsch, and Georg Neuschäffer)
ILR Review (2024), 77(3), 396–427
This paper examines how organized labor interacts with labor market imperfections in shaping employer wage premia. The results provide new insights into the role of unions and collective bargaining institutions in wage determination.
Explaining Wage Losses after Job Displacement: Employer Size and Lost Firm Rents
(with Daniel Fackler and Jens Stegmaier)
Journal of the European Economic Association (2021), 19(5), 2695–2736
We show that wage losses after job displacement strongly rise with pre-displacement employer size. Wage losses are driven by lost firm rents. The findings emphasize the importance of firm-specific wage premia for workers’ earnings trajectories.
Firm Wage Premia, Industrial Relations, and Rent Sharing in Germany
(with Boris Hirsch)
ILR Review (2020), 73(5), 1119–1146
This paper analyzes how industrial relations institutions shape firm-level wage premia in Germany. The results provide evidence of systematic rent sharing and highlight the role of works councils and collective bargaining.
Transferability of Skills across Sectors and Heterogeneous Displacement Costs
(with Jens Stegmaier and Moises Yi)
American Economic Review: Papers and Proceedings (2017), 107(5), 332–336
We study how skill transferability across sectors affects the costs of job displacement. The paper documents substantial heterogeneity in displacement losses, linked to sectoral mobility and skill specificity.
Teacher Experience and the Class Size Effect – Experimental Evidence
Journal of Public Economics (2013), 98, 44–52
Using experimental evidence, this paper analyzes how teacher experience mediates the effect of class size on student outcomes, contributing to the literature on education production functions.
The Productivity Effect of Temporary Agency Work: Evidence from German Panel Data
(with Boris Hirsch)
Economic Journal (2012), 122 (August), F216–F235
This study examines the productivity effects of temporary agency work at the firm level, providing evidence on how flexible employment arrangements affect firm performance.
Works Councils and Establishment Productivity
ILR Review (2012), 65(4), 880–898
This paper analyzes the relationship between works councils and establishment productivity, offering early evidence on the productivity implications of employee representation in Germany.
