Short Bio

Stefan Gebauer is a Senior Economist at the Monetary Policy Strategy Division at the European Central Bank. Previously, he worked as an economist at the Macroeconomic Analysis and Forecasting Division at the Banque de France and as a research associate at the Department for Forecasting and Economic Policy at DIW Berlin. 

He received his PhD in Economics from the Freie Universität Berlin and the DIW Graduate Center and studied economics in Tübingen, Boston, and Frankfurt am Main. He furthermore gained research-related work experience during his stays at DIW Berlin, KfW Banking Group, Deutsche Bundesbank and at the European Central Bank. In his dissertation, he focused on financial stability issues, particularly on macroprudential policies and the role of the shadow banking sector for banking regulation, the optimal design of banking and fiscal unions, and the effects of excessive leverage on investment activity.
