In conjunction with their book clubs, the third grade literacy group has been expanding their vocabulary and making etymological connections. This practice has sparked great debate and lots of questions.
The third grade math group is wrapping up their own personal home design based on multi-step problem solving. Students then created blue prints of their dream homes. A ball pit room? An indoor pickle ball court? A stuffie room? Yes, please!

This group relies heavily on Socratic Seminar techniques and Accountable Talk conversations to make meaning of the many layers to this story.

Students are embarking on self-guided explorations of ancient civilizations answering questions such as:
What are the characteristics of a civilization?
What social/political structure was the most successful?
How did geography play a role in the civilization's success story?
What role did mythology play in the construction of the civilization?
What contributions (if any) are found in modern civilizations?
And debating what was the most successful ancient civilization in history.
Fraction Foodies with Third Grade Math
The third grade math group recently worked with complex fractions to create menus with specified parameters. Their math work was precise and the menus were full of creative cuisines. Overall 5 stars!
For this unit, students have spent the semester learning about ethical research and how to find valid, reliable sources. Topics chosen for this study included sea turtles, oil spills in the ocean, climate change and other environmental issues. Their fact finding mission was organized on their first-ever created outline, then translated to a presentation that was shared with the class.
Expedition Earth: Design your own country
Students learning about topography and the role of math in geography.
Solving for elevation, sea level, square miles of their country, etc...
Adding municipal buildings to the capital and calculating square footage.
Peer editing to critique the reasoning of others.
