Students in this hardworking math group just wrapped up their unit on multiplication and division relationships and are exploring the conceptual pieces of using fractions in the real world. These incredible mathematicians can explain how to find 1/6 of an hour, equivalent fractions for 3/5 and create four different models for any fraction. Kudos kids!
The GT Literacy group is taking some time to deep dive into Roald Dahl, his history, the attributes of his writing, the voice, the themes, etc... I am having a blast reading through the classic CCF with them. They are also exploring other Dahl classics independently.
Students engaged in multi-tiered problem based learning for this unit. Everything from price points to fractions to multiplying multi-digit numbers- this group did it all for the purposes of opening their own candy store. (The store may not have opened, but they did get to make candy!)
Autobiography study with 2nd Grade Literacy
Students have been engaged in a deep dive of Jane Goodall's life. In reading and engaging in expansive discussion about the events, cause and effect, comparing and contrasting of the chimps as well as connecting the text to their lives. In the end, we made a map of Tanzania (home to Gombe Preserve) using the Augmented Reality Sand Table.
To culminate the unit, the students are writing a fan fiction piece!
The second grade math enrichment group has had a blast measuring with fractions, solving for the unknown in equations and then constructing a scale model of their own city. I am so proud of the ingenuity they exhibited at the various stages of this process.
Choose your own Adventure: Math Enrichment
This amazing group of math students have been busy saving a brother and sister from a malicious villain plotting to take over the kingdom. (All with the help of a dragon, of course)
Not only were they using math to save the siblings but engaging in some STEM challenges along the way. We had a blast!
Wild Animal Care: Literacy Enrichment
Students tapped into advanced research skills to find valid and reliable sources for their wild animal care project all while learning the value of conservation through role models like Leah Thomas. After a peer review process, students organized findings to create and publish a brochure informing others of how to care for their wild animal "pets". This was their first experience with the TIM (Technology Integration Matrix), and the results were stunning. Enjoy a sample below:
On the Road Again: Math Enrichment
Our second grade math group is wrapping up a virtual road trip requiring them to calculate the mileage along the way. They worked together using their strategies to solve multi-digit addition and subtraction word problems and conducting error analysis to ensure they did not miss any stops.
At the end, they will get their own driver's license.
