History
Saint Mary Mission was founded during the pastorate of Father William Coen, the first resident pastor of Saint Dominic Parish in Orland from 1919 to 1929. Father Coen traveled to Hamilton City and celebrated Mass for the Catholic faithful twice each month, helping a local community of faith take root about ten miles from Orland.

The first Saint Mary church had been purchased elsewhere and transported to Hamilton City in sections. After years of service, the wooden building became old and unsafe. In 1967, during the pastorate of Father Thomas Boland, it was replaced by a new stucco church at the present site.

Saint Mary remains a mission of Saint Dominic Parish. Although the church is modest in size, it has long served a vibrant community, especially generations of Hispanic Catholic families. Its history reflects the sacrifices of priests and parishioners who carried the Eucharist, the sacraments, and parish life beyond Orland so that the people of Hamilton City could worship close to home.
