This workshop brought together the core team of 7 (founding members) as well as two seasoned professors from Johannesburg and Cape Town. The aim was to have the perspective of senior supervisors having gone through the whole journey already. The issues highlighted by the group were discussed in detail over two days. This was very insightful, with the most significant comment received being that of this crisis being viewed rather as an opportunity. The group took this to heart and have progressed in this direction during the rest of 2022.
This workshop brought together 22 early-career academics from across South Africa, in addition to the core 7. This in-person workshop focused specifically on the development of a network of Statistical Sciences Doctoral Supervisors in South Africa, expanding on the expertise gained by the core group to all over South Africa and building a list of expertise.
This workshop extended on the that held for early-career academics in January 2023, however, this time bringing together mid-career academics across South Africa, with such academics having more experience in the supervision of Statistics doctoral students. This additional experience brought about fruitful discussions in the challenges and opportunities of doctoral supervision.
