Statistics Supervision Network in South Africa
Founding Members
Prof Inger Fabris-Rotelli (University of Pretoria)
Prof Fabris-Rotelli initiated the original interest group after attending the CREST Training Course for Supervisors of Doctoral Candidates at African Universities in 2019. She is currently an associate professor in the Department of Statistics, University of Pretoria. She has been at the Department of Statistics since 2004.
She holds a PhD Mathematical Sciences, obtained in 2013, an MSc Applied Mathematics, a double BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Statistics and Applied Mathematics and a BSc Applied Mathematics.
She has supervised over 50 honours and 35 Masters students to completion, and is currently supervising 7 honours, 5 Masters and 9 doctoral students, and has a particular passion for postgraduate supervision. She has published 27 peer-reviewed journal articles, 21 peer-reviewed conference proceedings papers and 1 book chapter.
She was on the executive of the South African Statistical Association (SASA) from 2012 – 2018, and from 2019 sits as a director on the ICCSSA (Institute of Certificated and Chartered Statisticians in South Africa) board. She is the current president of SASA and the CEO of ICCSSA. She is also a member of ISI, ISPRS and IMS internationally, and the Golden Key Society, SASA, S2A3, SAMS, ICCSSA (registered as a Chartered Statistician from 2019) GISSA, SAMSA, GASA and RLadies Johannesburg co-chair locally. She is a SACNASP council member elected 2021 – 2025.
Her research interests are in spatial statistics and GIS, as well as remote sensing and general image processing, including spatial epidemiology and criminology. She has a number of countrywide research collaboration group, namely SEPIMOD (Spatial Epidemiological Modelling) and StatSNetSA. Both these groups have resulted in a number of publications, postgraduate student growth and young academic development. She has a National Research Foundation Y2 rating in recognition of her research.
Prof Fabris-Rotelli is an Abe Bailey Fellow (2007 tour award), is a 2018 fellow of the TUKS Young Researcher Leadership Program (TYRLP), and was selected as a BRICS Young Scientist 2020 in Artificial Intelligence.
Prof Michael J. von Maltitz (University of the Free State)
Prof von Maltitz is a an associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of the Free State, South Africa. He obtained his PhD in Mathematical Statistics at the UFS in 2015 and has since split his research focus to include experimentation in learning and teaching in Mathematical Statistics.
Dr Ansie Smit (University of Pretoria)
Dr Ansie Smit is a senior lecturer in the Department of at the University of Pretoria, lecturing and supervising in both the department and the Department of Statistics. She has a background in financial mathematics and mathematical statistics with research interests that include the multidisciplinary theoretical and applied fields of statistics and geosciences with direct applications in the insurance, mining, construction, and nuclear industries. These interests include the statistical modelling of various geological, meteorological, and hydrological natural disasters, by focussing on methodologies to address the effects of missing data in statistical procedures, accounting for high levels of aleatory and epistemic uncertainty in data, developing and applying numerical and computing techniques for data analysis, and other applied statistical methods necessary for hazard and risk assessment, including geo- and spatial statistics, Bayesian statistics, and extreme value theory.
Prof Sonali Das (University of Pretoria)
Prof Das is a full professor at the University of Pretoria (UP). She obtained her PhD in Statistics from the University of Connecticut (USA) in 2006, and holds a C-Rating (Established Researcher) in Statistics from the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). In 2019, she became an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute, and in 2020 was one of 19 Africa-wide recipients of the Mujeres por Africa Foundation award from Spain. Her current interests lie in developing models to assess risks within the adversarial risk framework, and functional data framework, with Bayesian extensions where appropriate, all with focus on applications to climate and business problems. Along with Allan Clark, she looks after the Bayes Special Interest Group within SASA.
Dr Danielle Jade Roberts (University of KwaZulu-Natal)
Dr Roberts is a senior lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and holds a PhD in Applied Statistics. She has vast experience in teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules and has been involved in the supervision of several Statistics and Data Science Masters students. She has also been a reviewer for international ISI journals. Her research interests lie in taking a data-driven approach to solve real world problems using applied statistics and machine learning. Her focus has been on public health and societal issues in Africa, where resources are limited.
Prof Daniel Maposa (University of Limpopo)
Professor Maposa is a distinguished Professor of Statistics and Head of Department for the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, University of Limpopo. He holds a PhD degree in Statistics with specialisation in Extreme Value Theory (EVT) from University of Limpopo, a certificate in Doctoral Supervision from Stellenbosch University, a certificate in Research Ethics and Integrity from University of Witwatersrand, and Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education and Technology (PGDHET) from Durban University of Technology. Prof Maposa is NRF C2-Rated and is the Chairperson of the Turfloop Ethics Research Committee (TREC) which is the committee responsible for human research ethics in the University. Prof Maposa is a registered Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) in both Statistical Sciences and Mathematical Sciences, and is a member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and South African Statistical Association (SASA) where he is also the Vice-Chairperson of the SASA EVT special interest group. He has published several journal research articles in internationally accredited journals including Springer Nature, Elsevier, Copernicus Publications, among others, and two book chapters.
Prof Fabio Correa (University of the Free State)
