Course Overview

Which Math 119 is right for you?

I teach two versions of Math 119. You'll find a quick overview below and can go into the details for each class at the bottom of this page. I may be able to help you switch sections if you think you'd be better off in the other class!

Hybrid Math 119

Some accountability and more community:

  • meets F 9-10:50am in MS 213

  • videos and discussions done outside of class meeting

  • classes are review + some time to get support from me and your peers

Recommended for students who would like a flexible schedule, but would appreciate the accountability and community that comes with checking in weekly.

FULLY ONLINE Math 119

Very little hand-holding:

  • no scheduled meetings

  • everything is completed via Canvas

  • not a self-paced course, new material will not be available until the Friday before

Recommended for students who can set and maintain their own schedule and advocate for themselves when they are confused with content.

WhAT DO I NEED FOR CLASS?

Short answer - NOTHING. I hate textbook publishers and won't make you buy anything for the course.

  • You do need a way to get online OTHER THAN your cell phone. Mesa has a laptop checkout, so you should be covered. You can visit Mesa Laptop Request Form to apply to borrow a laptop, web cam, or other tech resources.

    • If you have a tablet, you will want to download the Canvas app rather than trying to work through a browser.

HOW DO I ATTEND CLASS?

Even the FRIDAY HYBRID class is partially online. This means we will meet weekly in a computer lab on campus. These meetings are not optional help sessions, but designed opportunities to work together to better understand the material. Both classes will do the majority of their work online within Canvas.

CANVAS

Both classes will rely heavily on asynchronous work completed on Canvas. If you need help logging onto Canvas, here's a Canvas Help Video.

There is also a great mobile app that you can learn more about there: Canvas Mobile Help Video

CAMPUS CLASSES

Our class meetings are Friday 9 - 10:50am in MS213. This is on the 2nd Floor of the MS building on campus, right near the stairs up near the ⭐ on the map above.

IS THIS CLASS HARD?

I always get a question like this at the beginning of the semester, so I figure why not answer it now. I know you are wondering!

Yes. Statistics is a difficult subject matter. And I really want you to understand why we do certain things, what they actually mean, and how we can use these tools mindfully, so I won't just teach you steps to calculate things mindlessly. It IS challenging!

But also no. It's rare that a student who is really putting in the effort and willing to change their strategies doesn't pass the class. I'm redesigning my course this semester to try to ensure that and to highlight how statistics is related to your interests and field. I hope I inspire some of you to consider Statistics as a field of study!

My course is built on the idea that we aren't perfect the first time we do something and those mistakes are how we improve and learn. Every assignment can be redone after you receive some guidance from me on how to improve it. There are multiple ways for you to demonstrate your understanding - discussions, projects, exams, creative assignments... If you've struggled in a traditional classroom, I hope we'll find a way to get through this together.

Focus on the learning. The grade will earn itself.

The grading breakdown and logistics vary by class, so you can choose your class below to learn more.

Flexibility + accountability, weekly meetings while everything else is online.

For only the most experienced adventurers - completely online and in half the time!
